Playing for time of possession is meaningful but not necessary. Yesterday Northwestern bullied Maryland 37-10. Maryland won the TOP game 33:51 to 26:09, ran 85 plays to NW’s 52, and out-gained NW 355 to 283. NW had no turnovers. Maryland, however, turned the ball over on 3 times on failed 4th down attempts, lost 3 fumbles and gave up 1 INT. Essentially, 7 turnovers.

Today, Iowa destroyed Washington 40-16. WA held a TOP advantage over IA of 35 to 25 minutes. WA ran 80 plays to IA’s 51. Again turnovers were key. Washington lost a fumble and gave up an INT. Worse, WA turned the ball over to IA 3 times on failed 4th down attempts. Iowa had no turnovers … and averaged 58 yards punting.

Gratuitous observation: In the Wisconsin vs Rutgers game, AK was 12–32 (37.5%) with 1 INT and 0 TDs. Whoa!
