Who is this dork anyway? What's his background? He seems very biased against Minnesota. I know the Gophers haven't been playing their best, but he was unloading on them after the Illinois game. What really got in my crawl was that he totally discredited the Louisville win saying "it was a long time ago." WTF? Aren't all non-conference games a long ago? It still counts retard!

Besides, the Gophers aren't the only team that is struggling. There's a lot of teams out there that have hit a wall. Hell, Xavier has just recently lost to teams that I didn't even know had a basketball program. Also, Big Ten road wins are hard to come by...just ask Purdue. We're not the only team having trouble winning on the road recently.

I don't know, I'm just kinda tired of the piling on. We got a young team. It's not like we were expected to win the Big Ten this year or something.

But he's spot on about how the Gophers are playing

I had no problem with what Doyle said after the game last night. In a nutshell he said the Gophers still have time to recover to earn a NCAA bid, but that they better figure something out pretty soon. Sounds about right to me. The Gophers for the most part have been dreadful since the halfway point of the Big 10 season. Thank goodness for the Louisville win, more than any other win that's the one keeping us in the mix, but I agree with Doyle, that was a long, long time ago. Seems like it, too.

Not to mention, Doyle has mentioned many, many times when other Big 10 teams were struggling (i.e. Wisconsin). He's not picking on the Gophers. There's no conspiracy at the Big Ten Network against the Gophers. Doyle's just offering his opinion of what he sees. That's what he's paid to do. I'd be a lot more concerned if he was on the air saying, everything's jolly good for Minnesota right now, they look great & they're going to make the NCAA.

I don't think I could agree more. The guy has had it in against the Gophers all year. He doesn't bash on any other team like that.

Also I think he went to the Anthony Lapanta School of Broadcasting. Those hand gestures really bug me!

Glad MN is not playing Lville now

I'm just glad Tubby didn't make any early season NCAA predictions that people wouldn't be able to let go of and kept the quote highlighted on their messageboard profile !

Whew - we got lucky there !

Agree whole heartedly. I don't think we'd want to run into Louisville again, though I'd be thrilled by the opportunity to get waxed by em' because it means the Gophers will have made the NCAA.

Yeah, he's been tough on the Gophers since the beginning of the B10 season. The fact that he totally discredited the Louisville victory proves he's biased. I don't hear any other talking head on TV discrediting the Louisville victory but him. The guy doesn't like Minnesota, pure and simple.

I've only had the BTN for this season, so I'm not sure how he was last year, but he's rapidly proving himself to be a bloviating, blowhard who just likes to hear himself talk.

agree. i know he is "just doing his job" - whatever that means - but the last person who should be talking any kind of smack when it comes to the gophers is a northwestern mildcat basketball alum. please!!!!

go back to evanston timmy boy and hit on a physics chick or something. make sure to tell her you played on the b-ball team "back in the day" and tried really, really hard even at practice.

Thank goodness the camera closes in on a head-shot to hide his hands otherwise if they tied his hands he couldn't talk. On second thought...that's not a bad idea. Could he catch the ball when he played? Doesn't seem likely.

Something for Bronko to chew on

"but the last person who should be talking any kind of smack when it comes to the gophers is a northwestern mildcat basketball alum. please!!!!"

During the four years Tim Doyle was a member of the Northwestern basketball program (2003-07), the Wildcats were 5-1 vs. the Gophers. Go ahead, look it up. One should at least have an idea of the facts before one opens their mouth. Doyle pretty much knew nothing but winning vs. the Gophers while he was a "Mildcat."

i knew what his specific team's record was when i made the post. congrats to the mildcats, who like north dakota state in football, had success against the gophers in basketball during probably one of their worst eras in the team history. my point was look at the whole picture head-to-head and i don't have any issue with calling timmy boy or his former squad "mildcats".

thanks for the lecture though.

To pile on to what Snowman said...

Am I the only one that winced when I actually saw the word "douche" in the TITLE of a new thread?

Ogee, I did too, but I just figured that KyGF was lacking any knowledge of a more appropriate description, which just goes to show a lack of intelligence displayed by a few GHolers.

Not quite, I could've used terms like nimrod, asinine, moron, idiot, nincompoop, dummy, pinhead, nitwit, dunce, dodo, imbecile, jackass, numskull, or ignoramus, but somehow "douche" just fit the description for him a little more than other.

Or Dr. Don, shall I fax you my master's degree, if you think I lack intellectual wherewithal?

Personally, I couldn't care less about Northwestern's record versus the Gophers during his career. The fact remains Northwestern has never amounted to anything on the basketball court. So from that stand point, both Snowman and KyGopherfan have a point.

In addition, Doyle is a huge homer who revels in any victory Northwestern ever gets. That is Wildcat basketball in a nutshell. They've never been to an NCAA Tournament, probably won't get to one this year and pat themselves on the back with moocho gusto when they make the NIT. This makes a Northwestern alum's view of other conference teams a little bit interesting when it comes to making the NCAAs.

Having said that, my only real issue with Doyle is his love of the ridiculous soundbite. He makes them on a regular basis and most of them are laughably bad. He's even used some interesting "words" with some of them that would have made William Shakespeare blush. All and all, I don't mind him as much as some other national media types. I'd be even more impressed if he did away with the "soundbite" material....

Are we then to assume that you could have used those other terms but "retard" also "just fit the description for him?" Really?

Snow --I understand and appreciate your views on the use of the word "retard" and would add the word "gay" to your list. However, I don't find the word "douche" offensive. It is vulgar, but I don't see it as racist, sexist, or .... whatever. To some of us crude people the word douche means something specific that other words just can't express.

And Tim Doyle is a douche.

Moron? Probably. JD University of Minnesota 1994.

My point had nothing to do with his use of the word "douche." (Although, by using it the way he has and then using "retard" and "dork" as descriptors, he has made a connection between all three words as being somewhat equivalent.)

He apparently has a masters. Makes his choice of words even more puzzling, IMO.

KyGopherfan-

Some people are just determined to be offended.

I suggest that anyone who takes issue with any of the words that were brought up should write the message board and ask them to block said words. Let’s not turn it into a moral imperative or make claims about the intelligence of other posters.

You know Dan Monson is gone when we don’t lose to Northwestern at home. Timmy D would not have had such a great record against the gophers if Dan Monson could have solved the apparent mystery that is the Princeton offense. Aren’t we 4-1 against NU now that Tubby is head coach?

One night on Big Ten Tonight Doyle was describing a players inability to score. His comment was "he couldn't hit the bright side of a barn". The other annoucer looked at him and said, "I believe that would be the broad side of the barn, Tim".
It was good for a laugh.

One of the better threads I've seen lately

Can't argue with much of what Timmy said after the Illinois game. But that doesn't change the fact that he is a douche. And his hair smells like dingleberries.

When I listen to his accent and then see him look longingly at Gene Keady, all I can think about is the construction site scene with Vito from the Soprano's.

I don't have any problem with anything Doyle said after the Illinois game. The Gophers had managed to go 10-plus minutes and scored TWO points.

The Gophers didn't look at all like a NCAA tournament team in that stretch. And, frankly, they haven't looked like one very often in the past month.

In terms of the Louisville being "a long time ago," it was. The question that no one can really answer is how exactly this selection committee will put things together and what they will really value. When they are coming down to the final 10 or so at-large selections, will they value the entire body of work more? Or will they be trying to answer the question of what are the best teams today? The former would be good for the Gophers. The later would not be so great.

And about this whole bias thing, I don't really understand all these calls of bias. The thing about the Big Ten Network is that they've tried to be more than just a PR machine for the conference. Their experts will say when teams are playing well and when teams aren't playing well. I'm guessing that if the Gophers win their last two games, there will be much talk about how they've played their way in and done a good job when tested. If that happens, here's a prediction: No one on here will talk about how the BTN is biased toward the Gophers.

Saying a team isn't playing well when they aren't playing well isn't bias against a team, it's called reality.

Anonymous, you don't like the Gophers very much, do you? Gosh, I looked at your posting history and it's dripping with nothing but negativity towards the Gophers. I don't know if you're a supposed Gophers fan or one of those lunatic Tubby haters from the CatsPause, but you seriously need to chill with the Tubby and Gopher hatred.

I have disliked Doyle since his "nice state school education" comment to Spencer T. during a BTN broadcast. He followed that up with something on the line that at Spencer's weight, all he could do was dunk a doughnut.

Why are some fans so provincial? There probably wouldn't be much love on this board for Howard Cossell I'm afraid.
