Here are the press conference notes from Tim Brewster's press conference on Tuesday, September 14 following the loss to the University of South Dakota:

-Brewster opened by stating how disappointed again he was in the loss, saying they should have won the game, and just didn't. Also that the reality is they are a 1-1 team, rather than 2-0

-They have looked at the loss very closely, and have come up with a number of reasons why the team lost, and are now focused on USC

-USC presents a great challenge to the Gophers, and one the team is excited about

-He feels they left a minimum of 21 points on the board on Saturday

-He was pleased by how Adam Weber played on Saturday, but noted that he had two key turnovers in the game

-Defensively he was happy with how they played against the inside run, but not the defense of the quarterback

-They knew they were going to be inexperienced on defense this year, but that's not an excuse for losing

-Dom Alford will be back in the lineup this week, but not as a starter. He will back up Ed Olson at left tackle

-Kyle Theret will come back into the lineup as the starting free safety this week

-There will be no other depth chart changes for this Saturday

-Reiterated that Gray is not going to convert to being a full-time wide receiver...he still sits on the depth chart as the #2 receiver, and stated that in the future Gray will be future starting quarterback for the Gophers once Weber is gone

-On USC...a great deal of talent. Barkley is a great quarterback, and that he is moving around the pocket better than he has in the past

-Dillon Baxter is an exciting young player for them. He missed the opening game vs. Hawaii, but played well against Virginia

-Defense is big, physical, strong and fast

-It will be a good measuring stick for the Gophers to be able to play against USC

-He mentioned that the timing for Weber and Gray is getting better by the day, and that Gray is really having a lot of fun with the wide receiver position. He will continue to improve his route running as well as time goes on. He still is getting a lot of time in practice at quarterback, with Alipate running as the third quarterback

-On reviewing the film...containment and coverage were issues, with people out of position, particularly in the middle of the field. Lots of good things on offense, but left a lot of points on the field. The good news is there are a lot of correctable things, and the staff is working on them

-He noted he was disappointed for the fans, and had a great turnout from the student. "Our fans deserved a victory...they deserve a victory on Saturday." Said the fans are "starving for a winner" and that he's determined to provide a winner. Said that Saturday was not indicative of that process. Said that sometimes you have to take your medicine when you lose a game like Saturday's, when the team should not have lost

-Talk of the budget came up, with Minnesota last in the Big Ten for a football budget. Brewster's reply was that it was factual, and that the U of M has to look at the amount of revenue they are bringing in, and what's going out. Noted that it is what it is, regardless, and that they're not at a great disadvantage. He's got to maximize that money and do a better job with that. He finished that they do need to spend more on football and basketball, and that's a fact.

-On whether the budget is a sign of lack of commitment, he replied that they do need to spend more, but that you can't spend what you don't have. "We've had success at Minnesota, but if you want to have championship success, you've got to put more into the football program."

-"I can win with what we have...we should have beat South Dakota with what we have."

-Said that it was his job to win football games, and when they win more games, they'll spend more for football. Spending is a by-product of success

-On the process of adding more schools like USC to the schedule...the exposure on the U of M to play USC on national television is a huge positive, and that it's been good for recruiting. Kid want to play against good teams on national tv. He wants to continue to play one marquis BCS opponent every year, and that adding Nebraska and possibly going to nine Big Ten games won't change that. They will have a very demanding schedule regardless

-Said there's not a whole lot of a difference between a Pete Carroll coached USC team and a Lane Kiffen one. They are committed to running the football, but have great weapons all around

-He stated that the coverage units have been solid, and that there's a concern that Ellstad has missed three field goals. He's just got to get his confidence back on track, and that there is confidence in the kicking game

-On Ed Olson at left tackle..."really good." Says it says a lot that Dom Alford is backing him up at a freshman

-Thinks they're further ahead than they were the first year he was here. There's still some youth and experience out there that can cause problems.

-Said they're doing a nice job avoiding penalties so far this year, and that USC leads the nation in penalties. They've done a better job being a smarter football team...there wasn't anything penalty-wise that really hurt the team against South Dakota

-Said there's not a more competitive guy in college football than Theret, and that it has hurt him badly to miss the first two games

-He said he likes the way the linebackers have played so far, and thought the front seven did a pretty good job last week

-Mentioned there was a mistake on the bootleg play for a touchdown, and that there should have been a free man there to make a play for a three or four-yard loss

He wont be fired until the end of the season.

"Maturi said he plans to evaluate Brewster after the season, like he does all of his coaches. He said he doesn't believe it is necessary to publicly state his support for Brewster after every tough loss."

From an article in the pioneer.

Would someone who saw the press conference be able to comment on Brewster himself? Was he dejected, overwhelmed and beaten down? Or was he angry and determined?

Thanks in advance.

wOOOOOOOOOwwwAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Brewster flapping his gums and saying NOTHING of substance... AGAIN. *yawn*

All I want is for him to resign at this point as I have zero faith in him or his staff.

Hell, I think I am actually pining for the "glory days" of John Gutekunst.

(three days later and I'm still depressed)

Actually, I thought it sounded pretty candid for a Brewster PC. What did you want to hear? I thought he said all the right things he needed to say. What I did find encouraging was his statement about the mistakes that were made Saturday were correctable. Time will tell if his staff really can correct them.

I don't think this team is as bad as people think they are right now. I still think this team might patch together 5 or 6 wins and get a few upsets. I think we have too much talent especially on offense not to win some games. Minnesota nice will then kick in and Minnesota fans will be forgiving. Posters here will demand that we give Brewster one more year. I saw the same scenerio played out with Mase over and over again.

The head coaching job at the U is the greatest head coaching gig in college football. Very low expectations with a very forgiving fan base.

and

-On Ed Olson at left tackle..."really good." Says it says a lot that Dom Alford is backing him up at a freshman

The two above items initially stuck out for me. Ed-O really had taken advantage of Alford's team suspension and made himself a fixture on the depth chart as the #1 LT, protecting Weber's blind side. Nice work Ed!

Here's to hoping this kid keeps improving each week.

maybe we can get maturi fired before the end of the season, and that will allow removal of brew early, so we can get to signing a new one before theyre all gone and were stuck with a POS because maturi hemmed and hawed AGAIN

Now THAT'S funny! :clap::clap::clap:

Nice one 04!

Generally a nice PC from Brew. He certainly says most of the right things and I've never had an issue with his enthusiasm like some others. Unfortunately what he says really doesn't matter much anymore since he backed himself into a corner where he has to actually win big games to save his job.

Zero chance of Maturi getting fired. ZERO. Bruininks won't fire him, Bruininks is retiring, and isn't under any pressure. The next President will hire the next AD, but in the meantime, Maturi will pick the next coach. Unless you would prefer Brewster to stay around until after the next President has appointed the next AD?

That's fine and good if they can pull off 5 wins or even 6 and go to a bowl game. In my head, I keep saying "how is this better than Mason?" If they win 6--- I'll be upset they didn't win 7 because the South Dakota game is a damn 'gimme' for a legitimate Big Ten program, irregardless of how much money we spend each year on facilities.

Further, if Brew wants us to spend more money on football--- all he has to do is win. He's sitting on a contract laced with performance incentives and with the right bowl victory, it could be a huge payday for him from the University of Minnesota.

Meanwhile, my tickets don't get any cheaper when they come out and absolutely suck against a team from a city I can't spot on a map and a conference I'd never heard of.

It would be awesome if we could have one thread not hijacked by "fire Brewster"... just one.

Depression can mimic dementia....Brewster may be overly optimistic and enthusiastic but he was candid at this conference. You must be thinking of Denny Green when you say nothing of substance

Ok then, what should he have said?

Ok then, what should he have said?

"Ho hum. Minnesota is destined for failure for all eternity. We might as well just disband the program because we'll never win. We suck. Every member of the football team is terrible because no one good wants to come to Minnesota." - seems to be the prevailing Minnesota mentality of how a coach should carry himself.

Or it says what I have been saying for awhile now...that Alford sucks and should not playing anyhow. The suspension of Alford was a blessing!!!

Thanks in advance.

I would say, from my uninformed opinion, that he seemed very mellow comparatively to the past. However, I would say in general he has been more subdued than he has been in the past.

He seemed determined to talk about this week's game more than last week's loss. I did find it interesting when he was willing to go into the topic of the budget, rather than deflect it.

In general, I though he was controlled but candid, if that makes any sense.

The one mistake that needs to be corrected is hiring him...

What will be funny is when we look like a freaking joke against USC, people here will be saying "Oh, what were we supposed to look like, USC is so much better." Keep making excuses, it won't matter when your guy is in the unemployment line at the end of the year...

Just an FYI.. Brew is only 'our guy' as long as he's the coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. It's not like his hiring caused an influx of fans becoming Gopher fans or anything.

You anti-Brew people are killin' me. Many people defend him because he's the Gophers coach, nothing more.

We get it, he should be fired and hasn't lived up to even the relatively low expectations we've set for him. However, can one of these threads just talk about something else. This is the gopherhole we are in, we aren't good, we probably have a lame duck coach, we probably are coming off our most embarrasing loss in team history, but can we at least try to talk football?

Or is typing, "fire Brewster" just that much more exciting?
