After a very relaxing day of watching football all day long, i have several thoughts:
1. The Gophers really lack speed.
2. According to media sources, Brewster is a great recruiter. So why cant we play any true fresman?
3. The Gopher offense is so blah! I said to my self a lot today, "why dont the Gophers run that play?"

Your thoughts?

My thoughts:
1. I think the Gophers speed is getting better. Their defensive team speed is definitely getting
better and they are getting more athletic. This is showing up in a better defense. On offense, guys like
Whaley definitely was a notch up from what we had but strangely enough Carpenter who
supposedly is our fastest guy, rarely saw the field. It's not ALL about speed.

2. You don't win too many games with true freshmen at this level, just as you don't win
in the NFL with a lot of rookies, either. There will be some that can contribute, but there is
a big difference between an 18 year old kid and a 22 year old man. The kids Brewster has
recruited should be ready to go next year.

3. I think a big problem with the Gopher offense isn't necessarily running more plays but a
lack of execution and a real confusion with the entire unit. It does not operate as a
cohesive unit and they really need to go back to the drawing board to get back on the
same page. I would be shocked if they are this bad next year as I think they have a lot
of returning players who will benefit from an extra year in the new system.

+1. Completely agree on all three points.

The teams that are successfully playing highly-sought after freshmen are usually sprinkling those guys into experienced platoons where the whole unit isn't learning on-the-job.

I also think our speed on defense is improving.

GoldRush's point #3 on our offense is just about the best description of the Gophers' problems I've seen on the board. Fisch needs to develop a cohesive vision of what a college offense looks like and then help recruit to that vision. Right now, it just appears he's just throwing things at the wall.

Are you telling me that the most important person on the field is still the guy who gets the ball every play? Spermy, you are a genius.

It has been true since the dawn of time: you can't defend the perfect pass.

We don't need the perfect pass - I'd settle for (in native Minnesotan style) "pretty darn good". Even Stanford's tailback Gerhart threw an accurate pass - and key one - in the 4th quarter last night.

Listen, whoever the QB is next year, be it Gray, Alipate, or especially, Weber - this needs lots of improvement. My concern though, is that at this point, aren't you "what you are"? In other words, I don't know if you can practice up, or be coached up, to be an accurate passer. Just like a great shooter in hoops, or a great control pitcher in baseball - a lot of it is inate, or due to the existence of the "accuracy gene" on the double-helices.

Yes, there are other strands making up this rope of a problem - but even with more time, rolling the pocket out, and some WR drops, we still had serious comparative problems hitting open targets.

Oftentimes the receivers look confused about their routes and that is at least partially to blame for the lack of speed and explosive plays on offense.
