He wouldn't attempt to guess who would become the University of Minnesota's next football coach, but Gophers men's basketball coach Tubby Smith made it pretty clear after Friday's practice that he had a favorite.

Smith hopes former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer gets the job. That's no surprise considering Fulmer won a BCS national championship with the Volunteers in 1998, the same year Smith won a national title at Kentucky.

"He's a good man," Smith said. "I've known him for a long time, having both been in the (Southeastern Conference). I think he would be a great candidate."

Fulmer was fired after 17 seasons at Tennessee following a 5-7 season in 2008, which was his only losing season with the Vols. Fulmer, 60, hasn't coached since then. But Smith, 59, who left Kentucky for Minnesota while under fire in 2007, said that his absence from the game shouldn't be a factor in him getting hired.

"He's got the connections," Smith said. "When you got a guy like (former Tennessee quarterback) Peyton Manning helping, shoot, you can go into homes and sell. You can say, 'Hey, look, these are the guys I've had, the guys I've coached.' "

I would love to see Fulmer get the job. Behind Leach, of course.. but still. I'm not going to turn my nose up to a man that has won a National Championship and has the connections he's got. He's definitely in my top 5, probably top 3, dream coaches (meaning, guys I want that we have potential but more than likely won't get).

Something to be said for being one of only two schools who's football and basketball coaches have rings, no matter what name is on the rings. Minnesota and Florida. Home to SEC Champions. ;-)

Ouch.. lol

No, you don't want Fulmer

Take it from one who watched his demise up close, you don't want Phil.

I hate the fact that Fulmer and Leach are both interested in the job and we are going to end up with a mid-major type coach that will bring us back to Mason mediocrity at best. If this is the goal, hire Glen back and give him a chance to win in the new stadium. UGHHHHHHHHHHH.
