may depend on how much or how little we miss Wille Van der Steeg

First team All Big Ten Defensive Ends are not easy to replace.

I agree, having a strong pass rush last year, was a key for us starting out as well as we did last year. I'm thinking the Illinois game for one, the fumble TD, and Willie's hit as Juice was releasing the ball that fluttered out to Collado. Our secondary was on their heels and Juice might easily have come back and won that game for them if it hadnt been for the pass rush.

Waiting for Lawrence 21 or whatever other screen name he is posting under these days to show up in 3...2...1...

WVS will be missed for sure...but the W/L for this year will have more to do with how we run the ball verses how we rush the QB. IMHO.

Probably the biggest factor in our W/L record this year will be how often we score more points than the other team.

I have a funny feeling McKinley & Jacobs are going to step it up on the DL.

Never get tired of hearing that one. Don't quit your day job.

According to my research, the Gophers under Brewster have a record of 8-0 when they score more points than the opposition.

Look for this trend to continue in 2009.

Still not funny or original.

Virtually all comedy is by nature derivative. Nonetheless, I'll try harder next time to please the esteemed humor critic GopherFan75.

Seriously though, any discussion of this nature has to start and end at the OL. With even respectable o-line play last year, this team could've very easily won 9 games. We have to trust Tim Davis, and his résumé at Alabama and USC, to have put the right players in the right spots, despite having far more experience currently sitting on the bench.

I'm less concerned about the d-line at this point. Outside of Jacobs, all the players in the rotation gained significant experience last year, and I wouldn't put it past McKinley or Onwuachi to have a breakout season this fall. We are also looking stacked at DT with Small, Brown, Edwards, and Moen.

Because we have several players with experience I hope that we use a full rotation and keep our d-linemen fresh. There are few things more useless than a fatigued d-lineman.

Right on Bayfield...I was used to seeing our offensive line wear down the opponents. It's been strange the last couple years seeing the shotgun when we're on our own 3 yard line.
Our defense has made baby step improvements, but the offensive line took three huge steps back.
This year should be considered totally Brewster's program. I hope they get it together as I don't want to see another team that ended like last year.

I'm less worried about the pass rush because I think our corners will be good enough to allow us to blitz more often to get pressure if need be. Plus going to a 3-4 look at times and bringing Simoni and or Reeves/Cooper/whoever off the edge will help to get some pressure too. Honestly Illinois is the only team we'll play with a passing game that is really something to fear.

How do you figure? The great majority of players who will see the field, especially on offense, are still Mason recruits.
