This is the one that stands out, take a look at the depth and speed upgrades that have been made since 07.

07 DE Vandesteeg(one armed Willy)RsJr/Campbell So/Brody Jr/Onwuachi So
09 DE Mckinley Sr/Jacobs RsSO/Onwuachi Sr/Moen Sr

Add Hageman/Wilhite for pass rusher specialists and the 09 version looks deep and veteran, at the very least strength at the point of attack should be solid.
The injury to Vandesteeg in 07 must have been a bad one, I still remember seeing him try to play through it in the NDSU game, get a TFL and come back to the sidelines screaming in pain holding his arm. We need someone to step up this year, but I like the depth of quality Seniors mixed with talented youngsters

07 DT Brown So/Small So/Meisel Sr/Allen Sr
09 DT Brown Sr/Small Sr/Edwards So/Kirksey So

Our best position on the team imo, Edwards and Kirksey provide real proven depth and Brown and Small are 2 years stronger and savvier than in 07.

07 OLB Hightower RsJr/Davis Jr/Shevlin RsSr(banged up)/Mannion Jr
09 OLB Lawrence Sr/Cooper RsFr/Triplett RsSr/Reeves Fr

The 07 LB crew was experienced but lacked speed overall, Shevlin looked far removed from his days of 100 M track championships, Lawrence could be a breakout star for us this year and Triplett is a strong run stopper with the speedy and highly touted Cooper and Reeves behind them
More speed and athleticism by far than the LB crew that Brewster inherited, add in a 3-4 pass rusher in Garin and the LB could be a strength for the D all year

07 MLB Sherels Sr /Shevlin Sr /Triplett RsSo
09 MLB Campbell Sr/Tinsley So/Maresh Fr

Ditto from the above describing the OLB's, Sherels was a warrior, but lacked speed and it showed towards the end of the year. You can kind of see where the program is going as far as Defensive scheme when you look at the depth behind the Sr Lbers Campbell should be solid this year and Tinsley has speed behind him, Maresh will be inspirational to even step onto the field, hopefully he heals his leg and contributes

07 CB Harris Sr/Steib Sr/Collado Fr/Thomas Fr/Theret Fr
09 CB Simmons Sr/Sherels Sr/Collado Jr/Carter Fr

Oh boy, much better here, remember Curtis Thomas running after Tyler Roehl of NDSU and NOT catching him, or Harris's fumbled blocked kick to run out the half, or Collado's head spinning like a top, I don't...

Simmons and Sherels are solid to great, Carter could be starting by the end of the year, kid's got serious ball skills.

07 S Barber Sr/ Theret Fr/ Thomas Fr
09 S Royston Jr/Theret Jr/Dandridge So

Barber did all he could to bring his team victory in 07, but there just is so much one guy can do on a defense at safety. Theret showed up late in the year and was a nice suprise i believe to most. Now we have Theret circa year 3 and Kim Royston returning from the Red netherworld across the river Styxx, I mean St. Croix, we should be savvy and good in run support if nothing else here in 09.

I like the looks of our D, my hope is that a light goes on for some of our young DE's and we can chase a few Qb's around, DT, LB, and S all will be great in run defense, CB's look solid, but even the best secondary needs a pass rush to thrive. Alot more speed than the 07 squad though and really puts the recruiting Brew has brought in look good.

Thanks! Agree or disagree it's posts like these that make message boards fun to read!
