I'm not in the camp that says all is well despite losing to Michigan. I had no expectation of beating them before the year started, but they were ripe for picking yesterday. At some point, you need to be able to win a home game against a good team.
We're up 7-0, all the momentum in the world and we have them in 3rd and 17, and we give up a 45 yard touchdown pass where no defender is within 10 yards of the guy. It wouldn't have bothered me if he threw the ball into traffic and a Michigan receiver went up and made a play. What bothered me was that it was a total mental breakdown. Take away that one play and the terrible pass interference call on Shabazz in the end zone on 3rd down, and we lead 7-3 at the half instead of being down 14-7. Those two plays were an 11 point swing, and probably the difference in the entire game from a momentum standpoint.
It's been said already, but the fake field goal call was one of the worst I've ever seen. Our defense has a nice 3 and out to start the 2nd half, then our offense moves the ball down to their 15 yard line, and for some reason the staff gets desperate? Before the fake field goal, I hated the decision to go for it on 4th and 2 with a Nelson run even before we converted. Kick the field goal and your down 14-10. Without the terrible pass interference call on Michael Carter the following possession, the Gophers are down 4 with the ball midway through the 3rd quarter, and a chance to be in the game to the end.
