#8 Minnesota 9 Pittsburgh 6
Unbeaten Gophers beat Pitt for the 9th time in a row before homecoming crowd of 63,000 plus. A versatile junior quarterback from the state of Washington throws a touchdown pass, recovers a Pitt fumble at the Gopher 1-yard line and breaks up a pass play in the Gopher end zone.In 1957, he will become the only Gopher player ever to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated (and an early victim of "The SI curse"). Can you name him?
The receiver of that Gopher touchdown pass is a player from Brainerd who will go on to play 5 seasons as a defensive end with the Giants and Raiders. Can you name him?
The Gophers get the winning field goal with 2:30 left in the game and catch a huge break when a Pitt player returns the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, only to have it nullified by a clipping penalty. This Pitt player will go on to play 8 seasons as a receiver with the Redskins and Giants and then become the head coach of the Jets. Can you name him?

Minn QB: Bobby Cox

Go Gophers!!

Bobby Cox - made the cover of Sports Illustrated as "Best College Quarterback." Gophers lost only one conference game, to Iowa 0-7, but had a scoreless tie with Northwestern and a tie also with Wisconsin - those cost us a shared title - and Warmath way too conservative in the NW game.

The loss to Iowa was a big disappointment. Minnesota fumbled six times and lost four of the bobbles and threw two interceptions in the Gopher homecoming game. Iowa went on to steamroll Oregon State in the Rose Bowl.

If my memory serves me correctly, the Northwestern game, a 0 -to 0 tie, was played on sloppy field in the rain and snow at Memorial Stadium.

Go Gophers!!

It just goes to show that every generation of Gopher Fans since the mid-60's has had disappointments. But we have also had some happiness. I prefer to remember the Happiness.

Go Gophers!!

Ruesse was talking a couple of days ago about the Gophers playing the Washington Huskies(I think @ Wash). Bobby Cox was injured and unable to play. The Gophers still managed to win and the headline in the paper was......"Gophers Defeat Huskies With Cox Out".

He a;so managed the Atlanta Braves for many years :p
