Kevin McHale has 20 points and Mark Hall adds 18, including 7 free throws in final two minutes that keep Gophers from blowing 15-point lead before 17,345 in the Barn. OSU gets 14 points from a 6'11" center/ power forward who would go on to score 2,000 points with 1,000 rebounds for Buckeyes before moving on to an 18-year NBA career.Can you name him?
Bonus Question- 11 points are scored for OSU are scored by a 6'7" forward who averaged 20 points & 10 boards per game as an NBA rookie before chronic knee problems ruined his career and moved him into telecasting. Can you name him?

Leo: You are correct. Miller got fired at OSU and got a job at a school that became a first round opponent of the Gophs, I think in 1989, can you name the school?

And it may have been a second round game
 


That was the year of the 2nd Gopher Sweet Sixteen run under Clem. They seemed to be slated to play a good Missouri team (Derrick Chievous?) but Northern Iowa upset Missouri, giving the Gophers a shot at a mid-major. Northern Iowa played the Gophers tough but Burton went off for about 36, wearing a face mask to protect a broken nose, I believe. The year before, the Gophers were similarly blessed in round 2 when Siena knocked off Stanford, sparing the Gophers a likely loss, though Siena proved to be no slouch.
 

Leo: I think that was the year that Willie Burton played with a facemask. They were selling t-shirts with Goldy Gopher with a facemask. I believe I had one.
