This coming School year will be a great year for Gopher fans. It will go down as one of the best school years in Gophers Men's sports history. Our Football, Basketball, Hockey, Wrestling, and Baseball teams will be able to play with anyone in the country! It will be a very, very, very, very good year.

Anyone in the country? Will you share? I would settle for 3/4 of the teams in the conference.

Hope you're right. I really do.

I don't see it. Tons of question marks with the football team, not to mention a brutal schedule. The hockey team will likely be coming off its second straight bottom five finish in the WCHA...inexcusable. The baseball team will probably have to replace four of its eight position starters and is coming off its first losing season in about 40 years. The wrestling team is young but aside from the top three guys in the lineup and with Schlatter coming back....pretty weak outside that. The only thing near a guaranty is the basketball team will be better.

Shouldn't being "able to play with anyone in the country" be the minimum we accept? Have we sunk so low?

football - not even close
basketball - possibly
hockey - maybe
wrestling - nein
baseball - nyet

To paraphrase Meat Loaf, "Don't be sad...'cuz two out of five ain't bad"

Well I am a Long Time Reader and I just signed up today but i needed to reply to this becuase I follow all gopher sports.
So.
Baseball only loses 5 seniors this year so replacing 4 of 8 is not happening, they do have replace there ss and cf and 2 pitchers the other guy has not played in the first three games of the season. So going into next year i think they would be looking pretty good.
Wrestling Loses 2 wrestlers from current lineup in Tyler Safratowich and Gordon Bierschenk only a junior but is graduating and continuing his life.
So Returning Weight Current Rank Class next year
125 lbs ranked anywhere from 4-8 in nation Zach Sanders So.
133 lbs ranked anywhere from 4-6 in nation Jayson Ness SR.
141 lbs ranked anywhere from 6-10 in nation Mike Thorn RJR
149 lbs Number one recruit in nation in 08 Mario Mason RFR
157 lbs 3x AA National Champ Dustin Schlatter RSR
165 lbs Scott Glasser So
174 lbs Kaleb Young RSO or Top 10 recruit in nation 08 Cody Yohn RFR
184 lbs Sonny Yohn RSO
197 lbs Top 20 recruit in nation in 08 Ryland Geiger RFR
HWT ranked anywhere from number 10 -16 this year Ben Berhow RJR

Hockey
You lose 2 Seniors in RJ Anderson and Justin Bostrom
You lose possibly Ryan Stoa and Jordan Schroeder to the NHL
So you lose 4 players i think they will be a lot better next year.

Football and Basketball i will let you guys debate as you know more about them than i do and there is more public knowledge.
I just thought i would throw my 2 cents in the sports that everybody might not recognize.

125 thru 157 - potential all five AA....min. 3.

165 thru HWT - Glasser hasn't impressed. Young hasn't impressed. Yohn hasn't impressed. Will they improve...sure...but an All-American improvement? 197's been a black hole since Hahn left (and Koz flunked out). Berhow is what he is...maybe could sneak into an 8th. Hopefully after last year's 10th place disaster and this year's likely 10th or worse...they could get back into the top five.

Baseball will lose its seniors in addition to players that leave early. Happens every year so to say...hey, they just lose these seniors is ridiculous. Last year's team lost four players to the draft including Kyle Carr and Nate Hanson. What if McCallum leaves early? Decker?

If hockey finishes in the bottom half of the league for the second straight season, to suggest they'll be back to what they used to be is a pretty big leap.

Could be a banner year is more appropriate than will be a banner year.

I'm excited about the next year as much as anybody, but lets not get carried away. Lets let things play out.

I think that the upper weights will be relevent again for gopher wrestling!!!
Mario Mason 14-2 in his Redshirt Year
Cody Yohn is 12-4 in his Redshirt Year
Ryland Geiger 19-3 in his Redshirt Year
Sonny Yohn been injured finally getting a full tank back
Berhow HWT Has wrestled Top 10 guys very close pulling out a couple of upsets
Nothing to say about Glasser just hopefully he turns it on come Big Tens
125-157 speak for themselves

Baseball loses players every year but just speculating as of right now everybody should be excited that they are only losing 5 seniors.

Hockey has been down because as you can tell they are very young no other team in the nation deals with as many early entries as the gophers.
This years team could look something like this
Blake Wheeler
Phil Kessel
Kyle Okposo
Erik Johnson
and last year teams could have some of these players that were not around
Alex Goligoski
Kris Chucko
Nate Hagemo
Tom Pohl (Injury) so include him if you want

I know you argue that is what happens when you are top program but it would be tough for anybody to be consistent when you are losing half your recruiting class before they graduate.

I think next year will be a great year for Minnesota sports as I think
Football goes 8-4 overall 3-1 nc 5-3 c
Basketball makes sweet 16
Wrestling makes top 3 at NCAA
Hockey makes frozen Four
Baseball makes it to the Super Regionals
These are all based on my hockey only schroeder and stoa leaving and baseball nobody leaving early

Why does Lucia get a free pass? With so many advantages, anything short of a Frozen Four appearance has to be considered a disappointment.....In college hockey, you can have a decent season, then only need to win two games (often on home ice) to get to the Frozen Four. The Gophers should be there every year.

Response to number of points:

Hockey - Hockey will be much, much better with practically everyone back for this coming school year. Lucia will have his boys back on top.

Wrestling - They will be back on top again with practically everyone back. Same story as hockey.

Basketball - Will be the same song and dance as the other sports with practically everyone back.

Football - Same story with a ton of guys back but not having Van, Brock, and Roof makes me nervous. I think they still have the possibility to turn a lot of heads this year.

Baseball - This coming year they return practically everyone back. Plus, they will add one of High schools best pitchers in the nation. I do not think you'll see anyone leaving early after this year either.

The BIG five as I see it, will be veteran teams that should be very good for this coming school year. It should be a very good school year for Gopher Men's sports.
