Michigan's offense was already neutered, trailing by two touchdowns, headed for yet another disaster against a major-conference opponent, losing 30-14 to Minnesota at Michigan Stadium.
Losing to the Gophers for just the third time since 1967 and watching the Gophers seize the Little Brown Jug, storming across the field, was the least of the Wolverines' worries.
The Wolverines fell to 2-3 overall (0-1 Big Ten), the first time they've had a losing record more than one game in since the second half of the 2009 season and, according to ESPN, it's the first time in program history they've lost three games in September.
The walls appeared to be closing in with an inept offense that totaled 171 yards, a disastrous quarterback change where both touchdowns were scored without Shane Morris impacting the play and a regressing defense that couldn't slow down a mediocre Minnesota offense.
Yet coach Brady Hoke said he had no concerns about his team's morale: "Not at all."
While many observers wondered where the next win will come from after two absent performances, Hoke was looking ahead, still optimistic.
"I think this team can still win the (Big Ten) championship," Hoke said. "I really do."
The Michigan Stadium crowd announced as 102,926 fervently disagreed.
There were chants to remove athletic director Dave Brandon, chants to remove Hoke, boos at the play-calling, at Morris and the coaches for leaving him in when he was injured, and even a boo for the attendance, apparently hoping it would follow the game result and fall below 100,000 for further embarrassment.
