A close friend of ours and his wife who are avid Gopher fans came over yesterday for a visit to check up on my wife and I and catch up.

I shared some good news about my health scare. No, I did not have a heart attack or deep vein trombosis. But, of course they found some other stuff through the thorough checkup. My biopsies came up okay. However, I am to give up drinking, exercise more, watch my diet. The alternative is surgery for one of the ailments. "You're killing me doc!". My doctor said, no. Quite the contrary. What the heck? A whole slew of things to watch out and worry about?

On top of all things that are borderline, I have fatty liver disease. Early stages of it. So, he said okay. You can have a drink occasionally. But, do not drink regularly like you have been doing. That has to stop. Whew! I really felt with everything else going on I have dodged the proverbial bullet for now. I have to behave. I promised my wife that I will behave. ?

My friends don't go to Gopher football games anymore. Their own health issues make it difficult. But, they do watch on TV and keep up with the team.

We had some interesting heated discussions about the Gophers season. His wife is turned off by Fleck. So that is that. My buddy said that the Gophers really haven't proven that they can dance with the big boys yet. Although he was elated about how the season turned out. "They have beaten only one ranked team! Until they can beat Iowa and Wisconsin with regularity, then I will believe that they have arrived. Go look at the stats on the SRS and SOS". So I did.

The SRS Rating System takes into account the average point differential and the strength of schedule (SOS). Zero is average.

Okay, I give him this. He is right. The Gophers had the second softest schedule in the Big Ten West. Clearly, Wisconsin then Iowa had the toughest schedule, and both have higher SRS than the Gophers:

Team / SRS / SOS
WI--+18.93--7.62
IA--+13.64--4.64

NE--+3.24--4.58
PU--(-0.17)--4.49
NW--(-2.68)--3.91
MN--+11.21--1.38
ILL--1.26--0.76

IMHO, I told him that this is exactly the type of schedule that worked in the Gophers favor as far as a developing young team goes. That is the break that they got and they made the very best of it.

What catapulted the Gophers to a tie with Wisconsin as co-champs is their SRS. They have explosive offense and good enough defense. Early on when it was a difference between winning and losing close games, that was a difference maker in addition to beating the softer teams on the schedule by larger point differentials.

So, I guess we shall see how the Gophers do the next few seasons.

He said that clearly, Wisconsin is the class of the Big Ten West. They have been dominating their Big Ten West opponents for quite a while. I agree with him. Fa'alele being out with an injury made it tougher for the Gophers whatever chance they've had. In the big scheme of things, the Gophers were clearly out-coached by Wiscy.

He made an interesting observation that I never thought of. An impact player for the Iowa Hawkeyes may have been the difference between beating Iowa and going to the Rose Bowl and the Outback Bowl. That player is Iowa's NFL-bound 5-Star 6' 6" 280-lb. DE A.J. Epenesa. Two or three plays could have made the difference if AJ Epenesa wasn't on the team.

Hopefully, the Gophers are recruiting on defense to get disruptive pass rushers. Maybe someday, the Gophers will have their own impact players not only on Offense, but also on Defense.

Hungan - as someone who had a similar conversation with the doctors a few years ago, I sympathize. I had to completely change my diet, and I try to exercise as much as my job allows. It's not always fun, and I found some friends and relatives don't always understand. But you have to put yourself first and your health first, even if it means some friends don't like it when you say you can't have that drink.

As far as the Gophers, I agree. The SOS was clearly a factor with the CFP rankings. No question, the Gophers had a good season. But, if they want to be seen on an equal basis with IA and WI, they have to beat IA and WI at least half of the time. This year was a step forward. The bowl game - and beyond that, next season- will demonstrate whether the Gophers can take another step forward.

Sorry to hear about your health issues, I wish you the best. My personal opinion is yes we haven’t quite turned that corner yet. But it’s been a long time since we beat everyone we were “supposed to beat.” And I have relished in that for most of the year despite our disappointing losses. I do think our final ranking is fair around the 18 mark though.

This does stick out as the biggest difference between the Gophers and the upper echelon teams in the B1G. Every week's scouting reports listed at least one or two dominant defensive lineman that the Gophers had to neutralize in order to win, but the Gophers couldn't offer opposing teams the same threat in return. I can only dream of the kind of season the already very impressive MN secondary may have had if the line could have generated any kind of decent push throughout the season.

As it stands, i think Fleck has some studs coming in (or even already redshirted this year) that will ultimately be a significant upgrade to what we've recently seen. Gopher faithful just have to be patient, because it will likely take another full season or two before we start to see that particular improvement become obvious on the field.

Sorry about the news on the liver. If interested I know a guy that can get you one from a Chinese prisoner. He’s got a direct line to Beijing and the minute they shoot the prisoners he starts harvesting and throwing them on ice. 24 hours later it’ll be yours.

Thanks guys. It is tough. I repeatedly turned down Margaritas and other drinks at a recent birthday party. I am no young Spring Chicken. Injuries take longer to heal. Hang overs, I don't like them anymore.

I think the Gophers are on the right track. It is not surprising that some folks at the party are turned off by PJ Fleck. However, far more people like what is happening to GOpher Football and are turning into Gopher fans again. That is what winning does. I just hope people like my buddy's wife will eventually come around.

I'm down a prostate myself but cancer free. Already had heart issues the previous year but am mostly doing what the doctor ordered, in particular taking my meds.

Good luck in 2020...to both you and our Gophers on 2020 Day 1!

Take care of yourselves guys! There are great things coming for the Gophers and you need to be around to enjoy them. You’ve earned it!

A fatty liver is serious but can be controlled with decreasing your alcohol intake and losing weight.
The alternatives are far worse.

Sorry to hear this Hungan, but at least you got the heads up before it could get worse. I know you will be able to make the changes needed to see the Gophers in Pasadena a few times.
I was at a holiday party last night and I chatted with a buddy who is from Iowa. This guy's nephew considered Minnesota but went to Iowa, graduated last year and is now on the 49ers' practice squad. He hates Fleck and he hate watches the Gophers for the chance of them losing. He was quick to point out that Fleck (I threw in that I thought it was the coordinators) got outcoached vs Iowa and Wisconsin. Either way it is a valid point, but it seems there are less borderline Gopher fans hating on Fleck now and it's now down to a few people that for them there is something very personal about Fleck's style that bugs them. I was trying to think why and I think for this guy it is the fact that he just talks too damn much.

I just smoked two cigars and it is getting cold on the balcony here in San Diego and there is a giant carne asada burrito getting cold, but I have two more good beers to polish off before I hit the hay....better luck for me tomorrow

Fleck is not a "neutral" personality. Either you drink the kool aid or you do not.
Alvarez went to the Rose Bowl in his fourth year I believe.
I think the jury is still out on Fleck. If MN does not at least win the West by then and the number of season ticket holders does not increase the powers that be may be looking closer at him as they should.

OK Sconny.

Yes to getting disruptive play makers on the D line and yes to beating WI and IA at least half the time. And YES to good health for all GHers!

Take care of your health, hungan1. We're rooting for you.

For the people who constantly say, "Minnesota has only beaten 1 ranked team", just tell them:

Clemson (ranked #2) has only beaten 2 ranked teams.

Alabama (ranked #13) has beaten 0 ranked teams.

Oregon (ranked #6) has beaten 2 ranked teams.

Baylor (ranked #7) has beaten 1 ranked team (twice).

Florida (ranked #9) has beaten 1 ranked team.

Utah (ranked #11) has beaten 1 ranked team.

Everything you have written here is correct. Including the part about how MN has only beaten one ranked team.

Not sure where you're going with that, but...

Not many teams have beaten more than 1 ranked team.

And there's a reason for that; ranked teams don't lose many games.

Therefore, saying "Team A has only beaten 1 ranked team" can be a bit misleading because there's no context given. How many teams beat more than one or two ranked teams in any given season?

Answer: not too many.

In tone, it's like disparaging an athlete because he or she only won 1 or 2 Olympic medals.
