No doubt about it. I just got home from the game and it was ugly. I can't even make it to the 4th quarter anymore. I thought the opportunity to see USC and it's program come to town, possibly Joe Paterno's last game in Minnesota, and Terrelle Pryor possibly the best athlete in the NCAA were enough to be worth the price of admission, but now I have my doubts. The goalposts are coming down on Nov. 27th if Iowa clinches another Rose Bowl berth, possibly even without a Rose Bowl since college football is the only thing they have on us and that has to hurt. There won't be enough Gopher fans in the stadium to care, they will have left after the 3rd quarter and will be on the freeway.

Brewster owes Maturi and Bruininks a big thanks for taking him out of his misery. I can't imagine how ugly the last two home games would have been for him.

He also owes them one big thanks for allowing him to be a head coach and making a whole bunch of $$$...

I cannot qualify this as the worst time of my lifetime. 1983 was much worse. Even though I was a young child at the time, I can still remember how bad that was.

The defensive line was so overmatched physically that it wasn't even competitive. Ohio State did what they wanted to on offense. Kind of the story all season long. It isn't going to get that much better any time soon. This could take years to come back from.

How about the offensive line? It was bigger, faster, and stronger in a big way on both sides of the ball.

Yeah, we're really, really, really bad. We're legitimately one of the worst ten teams in college football.

Nowhere to go but up! Gotta look on the bright side, son!

We're light years behind where we were at the end of 2006...

Not really. In terms of talent we're probably a little ahead of where we were at that point, and whoever they hire at coach will by default be a huge upgrade over the incoming Brewster regime.

I see no point in wailing about the state of the program when we know change is just around the corner.

Man, you're way more optimistic than I am right now. This feels like one of those seasons that may take a long time to come back from.

You obviously have no clue what you are talking about.

You are obviously a lot younger than me. As futile as we have looked this season, it's still no comparison to Salem's last season.

Salem did not lose to South Dakota or Northern Illinois. His non conference loss was to perhaps one of the best college football teams ever, Nebraska. Salem lost all 5 games at the dome in '83. Brewster/Maturi lost all 7 games (hogeye game just a formality) at TCF Bank Stadium this year.

They were so good, they lost the National Championship game to Miami in '83. Pretty fair offense though.

Still drinking the Kool Aid I see. Those were pretty much all Brewster's boys out there last night.

My buddies and I were actually debating whether this year's team is more blowful than the squad that lost to Nebraska 83-14. The concensus was that this team is better athletically, but just coached a whole lot worse. Of course, that's just splitting hairs on different shades of crappy.

What we all need to recognize is that Khaliq in his bi-polar mania has been floating the boards since before last nights game. Khaliq is cool. Nuts, but cool. Just like me.

You're right. Salem didn't lose to those teams, but I would argue that the Northwestern teams he lost to in 1982 and 1983 weren't any better than either of those teams. Further, because the Big 10 was only ten teams in those days and there was an 11-game limit, the Gophers were limited in how may non-conference opponents they could schedule, so they couldn't schedule a gimme.

In 1983, after beating Rice in the season opener, Salem's Gophers came within a touchdown of the opposition once during the remainder of the season.

During the previous season, after winning the first three, the Gophers lost eight straight and managed to get within a touchdown of the opposition once in the remaining games (and that was against Iowa). Plus, while sitting in Bullwinkle's Saloon prior to the Iowa game, it was brutal being serenaded by Iowa fans singing "Roses are red, Violets are blue, You may beat us, But Northwestern beat you."

My defense of Brewster here is the equivalent of a left-handed compliment. We lost to Northwestern by one this year. A Northwestern team of this year's caliber would have beaten Salem's 1982 or 1983 squads by three touchdowns.

I really don't think there's any debate that the 1983 team was worse than this year's - the Gophers barely beat an awful Rice team and lost its other games by 71, 12, 51, 7, 39, 11, 24, 27, 48 and 51 points. We've only had three games this year so far that we were down more than 10 points at the start of the 4th quarter. Say what you will, but you're still in a game if you're within 10 points with 15 minutes to play. I'd also argue that the 2007 team was worse than this one.

The 2007 team lost 6 games by less then a TD...

Northwestern? How many times did they turn the ball over inside the Red Zone & bailed us out with Penalties on 3rd Down? The team this year is a joke...

It's tough because we have been sold a bill of goods that the talent and depth is improving. I really do not see this being the case, especially on defense. As bad as some of Mason's defenses were, I am not sure they were this bad. These are Brewsters recruits, the big upgrade, it just didn't happen.

Well, the 2007 vs. 2010 comparison is debatable, not a definite thing one way or the other. In my opinion, this team is better than that one was, but I think it's pretty close. I just don't think either of them was nearly as bad as the 1983 team.

Aren't a few of the late 80's and 1990's teams in the running for this prize too? :D

Anyone still care to argue that this year's team is worse than the 2007 or 1983 teams?

Keep asking dumb questions...maybe you should just put yourself out of misery and be done with it for crying-out-loud. Holy crap.:cry::cry:

Nope. In fact, as weird as this sounds I prefer this season over 2008. We started 7-1 and just imploded with the worst being 55-0 to Iowa. Then we lost the Insight by 21. Hard to be optimistic when you lose 5 straight after starting 7-1. I like how this year ended in terms of looking ahead. Call me crazy..

Thanks for bumping this. The 1983 team still takes the cake for me. An injury-decimated squad with zero depth, but they were just bad.

Absolutely correct. I agree 100%.

Bringing home Floyd trumps any season of Brew's. Of course, I'm one of those fans that would rather beat Iowa and Wisconsin every year and lose the remaining 9 games than lose to both Iowa and WI but win the other 9.

Call me crazy..
