I'm a big proponent of having a very difficult nonconference opponent early on before conference play. Cal is supposedly going to be a stellar team this year. I believe this is the most important game on the schedule.

It is this type of game that gives all the players a reality check for the Big 10 season. The O-line, defense, WRs, etc. will be able to look back on how well or poorly they played against top talent and, hopefully, will be able to learn from the experience and improve their game for Big 10 play.

While I think they lose this matchup, I'm optimistic about the lasting effects of this matchup for the Big 10 season. Last year, our first reality check game came against tOSU. This year, I'm hopeful that the Cal game will better prepare them to compete and maybe help them steal a game or two against the Big 10's top teams (PSU, tOSU, WI, MSU, and/or Iowa). Hopefully the Cal game is the kick in the pants they need to win an extra Big 10 game or two.

Barely beating or losing to MAC teams doesn't do them much good either.
