I dont see why people get their ire up over that term used by Brewster. Its what all teams call their fans-i.e. nation. Reusse makes such a big deal out of it. I just heard Tubby use the term for gopher fans. To me its just a phrase that means---OUR FANS. Its not a big deal Reusse. Find something important to critique.

I was watching the ESPN documentary on Miami today and I was interested to see that Schellenberger sounded a lot like Brewster did when he came to Miami. Talking about national championships and telling his recruits that they would be playing for a national title. They had some of his players on and they all commented that this was the reason that they wanted to play for him.

Of course there are differences between Schellenberger and Brewster, just thought it was interesting.

Gopher Nation is not actually a nation but rather a loose confederacy.

I think why it gets a bit of a chuckle from most non-partisan (gopher homers will call them haters) people is that there is no Gopher Nation. If you saw the attendance, at a brand new stadium, once things started to go south a bit for the Gophs, you will see why "Gopher Nation" gets a bit of a laugh.

It sounds contrived and worse yet reminds me of the dreaded Red Sox nation.

First of all all of the tics to every football game were sold, so it's not as if fans aren't supporting the team financially. Second, all teams not named Michigan have the amounts of fans in the seats wax and wane a bit based on how well the team is performing on the field. Minneapolis is no different than Madison in this respect.

Also, Wisconsin was much more successful than the Gophers in the 90s, and slightly more successful than the Gophers in the aughts, apparently. Historically, the Gophers have had far more success than the Badgers. Fair weather fans come and go with year to year results. But to say there is no Gopher nation is just as absurd as saying there is no Badger nation. Hardcore fans (like many of those on this message board) love the Gophers just like I'm sure your cohorts over at BadgerPit or whatever you call it love the Badgers.

Trying to use this as a way to slam the Gophers is just silly. Grow up Badgerboy

Empty seats in Camp Randall and clown-style football was the stuff of legend. Why do you think so many media types have been smitten with Badgeritis during the recent period of success? They know it was an unlikely climb and also realize it can't last forever.

Contrived (as used by Khaliq) is the perfect word.

I'm OK with the term as long as it remains associated with Brew/Gopher football, but as a Gopher basketball fan I wish Tubby wouldn't use it. Football can have it.
