The students weren't the only fans that didn't show up today

I couldn't believe how many empty seats there were between the 10s today - both lower and upper levels.

Do you think there were more than 42-43K fans there today?

Go Gophers!!

5K students were missing out of the 10K, so with the empty seats elsewhere, I'd guess 40K there today. And also I'd guess there were as many SDSU fans there as there were students. A very respectable showing by the Jackrabbit followers, and another apathetic showing by our future fanbase.

I've been downright embarrassed by the attendance in our student section this year. They need to cut the student section to about 6,000 next year.

The students that have been showing up have been very loud and have been great...apparently there aren't 10,000 students that care though.

The bottom line is pretty simple. Our fans suck. The reality is that we have a large number of ignorant, front running jackbags in the stands right now. Unfortunately, we need them right now. I sit in 137 and witnessed these gems from those around me today:

Four idiot students sitting in the row ahead of me. The highlight of their day was making a "Fire Brewster" and "Play Gray" sign. They sat and bi+ched from the moment they walked in. One kid booed Weber before we took a snap then later screamed "You sucK Weber" on a false start by the line and later when we had a penalty on a punt return. Why? Because there was a number 8 on the field. The fact it wasn't Weber on either play is evidently immaterial.

The old ladies screaming at people to sit down on 3rd downs.

The guy whose girlfriend puked at the Purdue game and left before half screaming about poor playcalling on every play.

The 40 something guys who left a tie game with 5:00 minutes left.

That's just a few. Truthfully, I think it will take 10 years to rebuild a rabid, loyal fanbase if we can do it at all. The students who come are great and if we can get 50% of them to buy tickets post graduation and stay involved, we can build a good fanbase, but it will take time and hopefully, attrition amongst the a$$hat crowd, old crowd and front-runner/I just do what is trendy fans. It can happen and while winning would help it and should be expected, it shouldn't be a requirement. If schools like South Carolina, Ole Miss can build loyal fanbases with their rather weak history, we should be able to with our recent (read 40 years) weak history.

What are you talking about, they announced it as another sell out and said the attendance was 50805. The University wouldn't be lying about that would they to try and hide the apathy that is taking hold in year 1. The only problem was the stadium was so empty today that their lie about attendance wasn't even up for debate.

every ticket was sold, so it is a sell out.

First off every ticket is not sold, there are singles in my section and in my row that have been open for every single game this year. But aside from that how do you account for them claiming a attendance of 50805

who would pay to watch this crap????? What a horribly coached team. He is sucking the life out of every Gopher fan

Maturi, get on the phone and start calling around. See if you can get Kelly, Harbaugh, Patterson, Lou Holtz, Dungy, Mike Tice, anyone...to come here.

Every team in the country announces the number of tickets sold, not the actual turnstyle count. That is why they announce the game as a "sell out" rather than saying "there is a butt in every seat today, except at this moment where some may be using the bathrooms, buying a Panino, talking to friends in another section, etc...". Standard practice. As for the singles, one of my neighbors kids is a freshman at the U this year and couldn't get student season tickets, but has wanted to go each week, so he has been buying single game tickets and opposition returns and sitting in the student section each week, so unless you can definitively prove the tickets are not sold, your argument holds no water. As for our lame fanbase showing up and staying, you certainly have a point there.

Wrong. The P.A. announcer said that the ATTENDANCE was 50,350, or whatever the capacity of the Brickhouse is. I remember commenting about it to the guy sitting next to me. It was an outright lie.

Ugh...it's not a lie. Tickets sold = "attendance." End of story.

+1. I was super pissed after our first few losses, but now I could just care less. When it rains, it poors and this coaching staff has almost made this Gopher team unbearable to watch for even its most rabid followers. Most casual fans just probably turn the channel after watching the first five minutes. What was very funny to me was one of my good friends, who is a casual fan at best, decided to watch the game on Saturday and was saying the same things everyone on this board have been saying the whole year after watching the team for 10 minutes after having not watched them the whole season.

That may be true but it is still a lie.

Virtually every college or pro team does it that way. Paid attendance is what they announce and report. I've been to minor league baseball games in which there was maybe 1,000 fans in the stands but they announce 1,500+.

That may be true to an extent, but it is total fallacy.

That's nothing....I've been to many Minor League games with fewer than 1,000 in attendance and an announced crowd of 4,000.

If the Gophers can't become a better team in most years, I expect attendance to get worse. Its unfortunate, but the new stadium effect will die down a bit and there are so many options for sports dollars in this area.

This is exactly correct. There's way too many crappy fans in our base. If you want to boo a team, go to a pro game. The fact that people boo 18-22 year old kids who are playing their hearts out is shameful. I'm really hoping that those morons who got season tickets this year just because it's a shiny new stadium don't renew their tickets next year.

Throughout the season I agree that there has been a lack of students in the seats but I feel you have to take into account that in the bottom bowl there is generally more students than the "numbered seats"...this even happened at the Metrodome when I was in college...Im not trying to make excuses but I feel this is a legit reason why 1/2 of the upper deck is empty
