I just noticed that the athletic department upped the price for a single game student ticket to $30 as oppose to $15 for non conference games. They are doing similar pricing for Wisconsin & Nebraska. This is the first time they've ever raised the price for rivalry games. What makes them think this is a good idea? Very few students are going to buy these tickets. I realize they are trying to push the full season ticket packages, but they are pushing the envelope a little too far here. Students are not going to pay $30 for a single football game.

What's the season ticket price? Don't most the students have them already?

I would have to agree with you.

Dumb, dumb, dumb. With all of the empty seats in the student section, why would you raise the price? The last thing the U should do is try and make more money off of the students. I would like to see them do the opposite, lower ticket prices to $5/game. Create demand for the tickets. Once you start selling out the student section, then you can look at raising prices.

And the flip-side for $10 IA students get a game ticket and bus ride to TCF for the game...

This is where it gets even more ridiculous. They are still charging full price for ticket package for the rest of the season. They are advertising that it is still better to pay full price on season tickets than to buy single game tickets to every game due to the single game price increase.

lots of hyperbole and rampant speculation in this post and in your thread title/headline. in fact the thread title seems a bit silly and over the top considering we all know that will in fact not be the case for the iowa game regardless of a price increase in the single game ticket. just saying.

But you have to admit that it is a questionable strategy for selling tickets. I would wager that these are some of the most expensive student tickets in the Big 10.

I am pretty confused by the U's strategy this year. If single game tickets are still available, then bumping the face value from previous years won't sell the tickets. What makes it worse is that they are actively pushing for students to buy the season ticket package for $84. The package has always been priced at $84. They aren't pro-rating the price even though two games home games have been played.

Judging by the number of students that showed up and the number of students that had the official maroon shirt this year, it would be safe to assume around 5,000 ticket packages have been sold. So no, the game against Iowa will not have a completely empty student section. But you are correct in assuming the attendance won't take a huge bump with a $30 single game price.

It has always been $15 for a single game ticket. The U doesn't need to make money from students. That is why they already sell a heavily discounted price. At this point in the season, students may pick and chose which games they go to instead of buying a full season. $84 sounds like a lot if you are confident you will miss a few games. I just think the sales pitch to students has been a swing and a miss.

questionable strategy? perhaps, but it really depends on what point one is viewing it from. i think they can perhaps get away with higher single game ticket prices for the big 10 portion of the schedule and not suffer a lot of fall off. i understand you feel strongly the other way. but is the point you were trying to make in your thread title/post likely to come true? i don't think so. it was the over the top nature of your headline i found to be missing the mark in an otherwise thoughtful post.

The stupidity is incredible.

If the team is performing strong heading into B1G season, a reasonable pitch would be "Ensure your seat in the student section when you buy a season ticket package. Get yours today!" Seems like this would have a bigger impact than worrying about prices. Such missed opportunities.

You want kids to pay the prorated price for only going to the conference games? So what are we saying to all those students who bought season tickets at the beginning of the year. Thanks for paying the same price per game to go to 3 crappy oponents? Do you know what kind of kids only buy tickets for the Wisconsin game? Wisconsin fans. Same with Iowa. I will gladly have the U charge them $30. If you want the discount, go to all the games as a season ticket holder. Sheesh.

I'm confused why the students still get such a large portion of the upper deck anyway. They haven't filled the student section the previous 2 trips Iowa has taken here, why would anything change now by keeping tickets the same price? It's become perfectly clear the students here would rather sit at home then come to TCF anyway. It was a PERFECT day last week, and they didn't have more than 5 rows in the upper deck filled.

I have student season tickets. I have many friends that were only planning on buying for the rivalry games. They probably will not any anymore.

A lot of students but single game tickets. It's not just opposing fans.

+1 million. If you prorate the student tickets now, then hardly any student would buy full season tickets in the beginning of the season.

I like the idea of selling 5000 season tickets in the lower deck, having a 1,000 or so game day tickets at a higher per game price and taking the other 4,000 seats and making them available at regular price and as part of the ticket packs that force you to buy two or three games.

When the demand for season tickets exceeds 5,000 by a bunch, add another thousand. Make these tickets in demand as we continue to get better...but don't lose potential revenue on seats that largely remain empty now.

As far as the single rate...bully for the U. Bout time someone decided to focus on season tickets or else...the students have to learn that supporting the U is buying season tickets. Its the only way.

great points DLguy and i agree. you laid it out just right. this is what i was also thinking but couldn't quite put into words yet.

exactly. personally, i believe student tickets, and how they need to be managed overall, are a completely different beast from the rest of the non-student seats in sports stadiums. whether that be here in minneapolis or anywhere else around the country.

With all due respect afurry, that is probably part of their thinking and the "just want to see a particular game" students are caught in the middle. They got to think and quite rightly, that the U student fans of Iowa, Wisconsin and Nebraska who don't have season tickets already, are going to pay to go to cheer for their (*&%$!!) school so why give them a break on price? The campaign is probably for the students that want to see THEIR team but might understand that for the extra money, they can see a couple of extra games.

The IA/WI/NE "U" students who just want to go to their teams games? Honestly, to heck with them.

Student section looks bigger this year than last year. But lots of other areas are open. Just logged onto my ticket account and found there are around 1,000 seatbacks available in sections 207-214, for instance. Most bench seats in the upper bowl are still up for grabs too.

The problem is students at the U tend to wait to buy season tickets. They know that come August, there will be plenty available. Overtime, if the team improves, that mindset will change. But for now that is the way it is. Plus the students have proven they would buy all 10,000 seats in the first season TCF was open. They proved last year that 7K-8K or so would show up for Syracuse. And last they proved that even with a half full student section, they could still force false starts and delay of games.

The students still pay a stadium fee on top of tuition. Decreasing their allocated seats is not the answer. Raising single game ticket prices isn't either.

And pro-rating the season ticket package doesn't "discount" the price and screw every other student over who bought tickets early. Students who bought tickets before the season, and showed up to the games, got to go to 2 games already.

I agree that season tickets should be the goal. However, single game tickets are essential in selling kids on season tickets the next year. If they have a blast at the Iowa game and watch us run across the field to take back Floyd, they are more likely to buy season tickets next year than if they had missed that game entirely.

As an "addendum" the regular price for a ticket to the IA/NE/WI games is $75. The Penn State game is $50. So there still is a considerable price break for the foreign students :banghead: to come in and cheer for their Hawkeyes, Cornhuskers or Sconies.

Mr.Furry I understand and appreciate that. I'm more concerned about the ones who will be screaming and cheering if the bloody Hawkeyes KEEP Floyd.

For the record, I'm 95% certain it isn't the first time they have raised the ticket prices for the big games, I definitely remember a friend who went to pick up a ticket 2 years ago for Wisconsin and ended up not getting one because they were $30 (or something around that). And I seem to remember a similar pricing for this in football last year for Michigan as well as the NoDak/Wisc Hockey series last year.

Last year they were giving away tickets for the Michigan game.
