Kill said Wednesday that University President Eric Kaler approached him about a role in fundraising, speaking and teaching classes, but Kill wants to contribute as an assistant within the athletics department. A role in sports was discussed but not offered, Kill said...“There is no hard feelings,” Kill told the Pioneer Press...

“I think I did everything I can and more, but I still think I could still help them, and hopefully they will call on me,” Kill said. “We’ll see.”

Kaler said groundwork on a continued relationship is already being built. “The athletic department and others are already identifying and discussing opportunities with Jerry,” he said in the statement.

Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys succeeded Kill with a three-year, $4.5 million contract in November. Kill said he and Claeys talk almost every week.

But as a first-time head coach, Claeys has worked to put his own stamp on the program. Claeys did not consult with Kill when Claeys fired offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Matt Limegrover and quarterbacks coach Jim Zebrowski in November.

Kill supposed that Kaler wanted to give Claeys some added space. “I think he didn’t want me that close,” Kill said. “Let me be away from it and give (Claeys) an opportunity, which is (Kaler’s) call, not mine.”..
