Coach Kill was queried by Sid Hartman and Dave Mona on the Sports Huddle at 10:05 a.m., which was a half hour later than the normal time slot, and it was an abbreviated session. Terry Ryan of the Twins was interviewed in the first segment.
1) Sid opened by asking if all the players would be on campus during the summer months (including incoming freshmen) beginning June 11: Kill said they would. He went on to say summer is a critcal period, because the start of two-a-days is less than two months away when they return to the campus for summer work (classroom and strength and conditioning and unsupervised workouts). Sid in a follow up asked if the captains conduct the unsupervised drills. Kill said they dedicated one day during spring drills on what's expected of the players during the off season and what they need to do to prepare themselves for the upcoming season and the start of two-a-days. He also mentioned that the players will be supervised by the strength and conditioning coaches/staff, which he stressed is important for the players development and preparation for fall football.
2) Dave Mona mentioned the team's remarkable 3.04 GPA: Klll responded, "It's more than remarkable, it's unbelievable." He said it was a big turnaround in a year's time and then credited the players, accountability, study halls, tutors, academic counselors, etc. "Good things will happen when you work together." He closed by saying now they have to transfer the academic results/efforts to the playing field.
3) Sid brought up the difference in rules (contact with the players by coaches during the off-season) between football and basketball: Kill: "Football operates under a lot of different rules than basketball." He said the basketball coaches have done a good job in getting their rules relaxed and allowing them to work with the players in the off-season, "We have to do a better job . . . we have the kids on campus but no contact."
4) The abbreviated show with Kill closed with a question about the summer camps at the U: "That's (camps) our spring football." He again stressed the importance of live evaluation and the opportunity to personally evaluate potential recruits at the camps. Kill also said they try to get the bulk of the recruits to the camps from a 5-6 hour radius. He also mentioned that his coaches have been evaluating players at spring drills in the southern states.
Go Gophers!!
