Coach Kill's comments and responses to Sid and Dave's queries on today's Sports Huddle:

1) Sid opened by saying he thought the Gophers played a good game against Michigan: "We're all disappointed . . . you move on to the next one . . . at the end we couldn't make the plays and Michigan did." Kill referenced the onside kick that they practice all the time, but he said they didn't execute the play as they should have. The team had too many missed opportunities.

2) Sid said the Gophers must have the youngest offensive line in America: "We're probably the youngest team in the country." He quicky left the topic saying it's been repetitive and then said, "We played out of control." He cited the third and seventeen scramble and pass for a touchdown by Michigan, as an example of not being in control; however, he also credited Devin Garner for making the play. He said fortitude and paying your dues will benefit the team in the future. He closed by saying he likes the effort that the team is putting forth.

3) Sid asked about injured players being ready for Illinois: Kill only mentioned AJ Barker and Ed Olson. He's hopeful they'll be ready to go.

4) Sid mentioned an interference call and made a comment about the officiating: Laughing, Kill said, "You're trying to get me suspended for a game." Without elaborating Kill said about the officiating, "It's part of the game." He quickly changed the subject saying: "We had opportunities but didn't execute." At the end of the topic he closed by saying: "I'm not going to blame the officials; I blame coach Kill."

5) On the fake field goal, Mona said Nelson was out on the side like the old "Lonesome end" (play by the Army teams in the late 1950s): Kill said they ran the kicking team onto the field with Nelson out on the side. (They pracitice the play a lot.) Kill claimed no one was covering Nelson and that they didn't execute the play, which he called to shake up the game and a way to get a touchdown. He blamed it on slow execution. (However, there were a number of Michigan defenders on that side of the field and they snuffed out the play immediately.)

6) Sid about not having AJ Barker available yesterday: Kill mentioned Barker as being a very good playmaker and that they missed him; however, he didn't use injuries as an excuse (it's part of the game), and then cited the Michigan QB stepping in for the injured Denard Robinson. "We moved the ball against a very good defense." Again, he mentioned missed opportunities and not getting it done, whereas Michigan did: "(Michigan) Threw into double coverage and they catch the ball (touchdown)." He closed the topic by saying, again, he likes the team's effort and that they'll continue to grow.

7) Text question about taking snaps under center in short yardage situations instead of the shotgun: Kill said his preference is under center. They ran and got a first down from the shotgun when it was fourth and one and failed once when they were under center. He said they're presently running the option in short yardage situations . . . "Trying to put our kids in the best position we can. We're not there yet (wanting to run from under center, his preference and what they ran at NIU)"

8) Rodrick Williams: "Williams is going to be a great player." Kill then said: "We're playing freshmen against juniors and seniors." He amplfied saying that the team will struggle at times because of their youth, but they're growing up, and the benefits of their efforts and playing time now will pay dividends. He gave very brief comment about recruiting and improving the team: "Working hard and moving forward."

9) Jon Christenson: "He's our number one center . . . Jon's done an excellent job . . . he's struggled but he's gaining confidence . . . our team can't have enough Jon Christenson's." Kill said he struggled in practice with center snaps, however, in the games that he's played he's been perfect.

Once again, Kill said the coaches and players were disappointed with yesterday's game: "We had opportunities, just didn't get it done . . . I look for us to take a step forward and we have to have a short memory and get ready for the next one."

10) Mona - problems in the red zone: "We just got to make a play when you throw or run . . . give Michigan credit, they've been good on defense in the red zone." He said they'll continue to work on improving their offensive play in the red zone.

11) Illinois: "It's a very important game for us and we need to get better, more consistent."

12) Mona finsished the Huddle's first segment by mentioning NIU 63-0 win over U Mass: Kill said they had most of the players on the current team and that he's very proud of them. He also said the players weren't too happy when he left NIU and took the Minnesota position. "Wish them all the luck in the world."

Go Gophers!!

The Gopher's inability to score with first down inside the 5 reflects the inability of the center to move the Michigan DTs off the line. The Michigan DTs were 6'4" 300 lbs plus upper classmen who were very effective at stopping any offensive penetration in those situations. This might have been the opportunity to put Gray at QB and have him run the option. He is clearly a much stronger runner than Nelson and would have given the Gophers a chance to score.

Thanks, as always, DL. The only part I was able to catch was #12 and then Sid's promise to send Coach Kill another Murray's Certificate.

I met Sid once, many, many years ago, and I thought he was old then. But God Bless Sid and may he continue to piss off some of our GopherHolers for many more years to come.

Go Gophers!!!

The comments on Christenson are interesting, because I've been wondering for two weeks now if Tommy Olson still wasn't playing due to health. If Christenson is clearly the #1 center, that means Epping is locked in at guard (he's our best lineman), which leaves one guard spot open for Olson or Bak. You'd still like to think that Tommy would be playing over Bak if fully healthy, but nobody's asked Kill the question, so I don't know.

Also should be interesting to see what happens at center next season with Bobek eligible to play.

I look for RS Isaac Hayes to be in the mix at center next year. He needs to gain some weight but was a 4 star recruit as I recall.

We'll also have to see what happens w/ Isaac Hayes at center. With Bobek, Christenson, and in all likelihood, Connor Mayes in 2 seasons, he may be better utilized elsewhere.

Good point, why not get Gray in there at QB on short yardage situations?

I think if at all possible we should avoid starting freshman next year, redshirted or not. If the motto this year is that we are young, I don't want to get into a continual cycle of replacing players with experience with more freshman.

Bobek, Olson, Epping, and Bak will all be juniors next year and Mottla will be a senior (all, except for Bobek, with multiple years of experience). I'd like to think we could get three starting interior lineman out of that group of five (or six, if you're including Christenson).

Exactly what Coach Kill is building. You guys gotta remember, this is not like pro ball where a team can fill holes with Free Agents and/or trades. Ya grow as a TEAM, one year at a time. But of course, some GHers know better.

I agree with you that Epping has been our best OL this year, but I think Olson is considerably better than Bak. I also would imagine that if Olson was merely benched (non-injury related) that we would have seen him a bit.

But you're right, the real interesting question is who will be our starting interior linemen next year with Bobek in the fold. Another guy who I've been pretty impressed with when he was healthy enough to go was Joe Bjorklund.

On the latest depth chart, Tommy Olson was listed as the backup at LT. I found it very strange.

I don't find it strange at all, because the Coaching Staff is there every day, every play, every drill, but obviously you are the spy in the sky?

Dude...chill out. He didn't say he knew better, he just said it was strange (with the subtext there being "knowing what we know"). This is an internet message board, and if the qualification to speak is to be more qualified than the head coach, we might as well just shut the thing down.

Too bad he just can't come out and say "I made a mistake, it was the wrong call at the wrong time, I got ahead of myself and I was trying to do too much as a coach. We all make mistakes and looking back at it it's probably something I have to look at and think about/analyze". Just gotta learn and get better. I hope in his mind he reconciles to what a mistake it was. As someone who likes his go for it mentality I was shocked that his ego allowed him to make such a stupid call. He just got carried away and went way further than anybody I can think of ever would have. I just didn't think Kill would ever make a decision as bad as that. But here's to coach Kill, I'm still behind 100%!!!

Jerry has really been talking up Rodrick Williams over the last few weeks. I think the thing that will make or break his success here at the U is whether or not we can get a back with some speed to split carries with him. His body suits him best as a change of pace back. A bruiser that can mix things up when the every down back gets tired.

I am skeptical about this because Kirkwood is only a Sophomore meaning that we are going to have two bruisers in the back field for the next two years unless one of them decides to get serious about their weight, speed, and agility. OR unless Jerry can recruit a real running back that can accelerate with speed through the hole that will quickly find both of these guys filling back up roles.

Bingo. And as a result, I find it strange that I can't call someone on his usage of the the phrase "I find it strange..." without catching hell.

Later in the show, after Kill's segment, I heard at least two people call in to express their anger about the North Carolina series being dropped. They weren't just mildly upset, one was livid.

Whether you agree or disagree with the decision, get over it. Move on.

I wasn't even bad mouthing Kill and the coaching staff. I was simply pointing out he wasn't playing and he was in the depth chart at a different position, something a fan of the football team notices.

Get a life you lonely old man.

Marcus Fuller tweeted : MarQueis Gray still not 100 percent, otherwise Kill said he would have used him at QB and WR on Saturday vs. Michigan. #Gophers

The goal on the o-line is play 4th-5th year guys. If they play before that, they have a shot to win all conference honors or the team will not be very good.

I think this seems right. I watched the replay on an out route that almost got picked to see if he was able to sell the other options on the route to the corner and he didn't look full speed / athletic on the play.

I agree with those who would have liked to see him in short yardage. Hell I'd almost like to see them both out there with MG running the dive on the option if I thought they wouldn't fumble it.

Right. Speculation is half the fun; the other half is information (for which, thanks GHers).

I don't ever want to see a freshman starting on the O-Line after this year. Ever.

Ever

Go Gophers!!!

In Murray's Sid has his own booth which I happened to end up sitting in. There is even an engraved tag in the booth that identifies the booth as the one Sid sits in. Guy must eat free and live large in that joint!

Gray is supposed to have 36+" verticle, well he jumped about 6 in. Sat to catch 2 passes. He is not healthy.
