The Scoops: Raise for Jerry Kill still on Teague, Gophers' agenda.

Hard hitting great journalism from Doogie:

Assuming Gophers football coach Jerry Kill's agent, Jordan Bazant, gets an annual split of Kill's contract, he'll soon have reason to celebrate.

According to University of Minnesota director of athletics Norwood Teague, giving Kill a raise on his $1.2 million per year salary remains on the agenda, just not in the immediate future.

"We do want to do something some time," Teague said Thursday at the Gophers' Chalk Talk caravan tour in Redwood Falls. "We have to because he's so far behind the second to last place paid coach (in the Big Ten) -- it's about $700,000 (per year). Jerry and I are talking about it."

Yep that was worth a headline. Should have known better than to click the link.

I'm not sure what the benefit of Teague talking about this if there is no immediate action coming. Not to mention, he's added the caveat of "not in the immediate future" to the discourse as of late whereas a few months ago there seemed more urgency on the matter. If you feel he deserves a raise, give him one. If you don't right now then don't talk about it. Nothing is gained from ambiguity on Teague's part.

"The only difference is at the other stops we had three recruiting classes. This is truly only our second class coming in," Kill said. "I think it's similar to our second year at Northern Illinois (7-6 record). I do think we'll have a better football team than a year ago. ... We're farther along this spring than we were last spring."

This gives me pause. Weren't something like 18 kids in the 2011 in that class recruited by Jerry?

Just Jerry doing what he does to keep expectations low. In fairness he has now had two FULL classes come in that were 100% recruited by his staff. I think it would be safe to call the first class a half class because they didn't have the full cycle but they did have a few months to get their ducks in a row before signing day so they were not thrust into things at the last second the way Brewster was when he was hired.

Also to clarify the lowerd expectations thing is not meant as a shot at Kill it is just his style. Lots of coaches do what they can to set and keep the bar low, that way if they do win they look great and if the team struggles they can say that they told us it was going to be a struggle and take time.

Yeah, I get that. M.V. pointed out on Twitter that he also only had two months for his first class at NIU and he considers that a full recruiting class. I don't know how many commitments he honored from the previous coach in that class, though. It's nitpicking, but it caught my attention.

I don't get it either. It'd be different if he said something like "I've submitted my recommendation to increase Kill's salary to Kaler and the Regeants, but they haven't committed yet". Or "we're waiting to get final financials from FY13 before we make any final recommendations". But this almost seems like he's saying, "yep, the ship is damaged and taking on water, we know we need to start bailing at some point to save it, but not right now...". Just seems odd...

I take it as 'we're paying our FB coach the least of any school/team in the Big Ten, and we are $700,00 less than the next lowest. It's rather embarrassing and we want to look like we are competitive'.

That's fine. Then give him a raise if they want to do so. No reason to wait if their mind is made up. Otherwise it feels as if Teague is waiting on something to truly motivate him to get it done. There is nothing standing in the way of it happening if they want it to get done.

Maybe they don't have the money at present but want people to know they are aware of the situation.

I suppose they could use some of the extra cash from electronic pull-tabs....oh crap that didn't work. Let's just make the smokers pay for it.

The relationship between Kill and Teague is getting very inTEAGUEing.
Look, if JK succeeds he'll get paid and if he fails Norwood has more $ for the next coach.

I never listen to a word the new norwood utters. I just wait to see what he does. He likes to be a little slippery with his words. That's how he strikes me, any way. And, in the end, it is not what the new norwood says...it is what he does. The same is pretty much true for prexy k as well. It just doesn't do much good to listen to that pair of career administrators. In fact, it will most likely just frustrate the average person who pays attention to what they say as opposed to what they do. It is not what the administrator says...it is what he does that is the true measure of worth to the University of Minnesota Athletic Department.

It has always been confusing to me that the University of Minnesota Administrators and Regents have been willing to build an almost 300 million dollar on campus stadium and then pay a basketball coach more than twice as much as the football coach. And why bring football back to campus and then not have a clue as to how to establish a B1G/Big Ten Game Day Environment for that new stadium?

So, after watching over half a century of "word-based-b.s. coming from the administrators at the U, I now ONLY watch to see what they do. Perhaps the new norwood will be a good AD. Perhaps he will not be a good AD. I will watch his actions and see how they turn out. Maybe some day I will review some of the things he said to see how well those words match-up with what he actually did...for now: only what he actually does is exactly what he means to say.

Maybe the few mill that they used to buy Tubby out was supposed to go to Kill.

I agree with this. I'll be upset if Kill gets a raise on the heels of a 2 win season, but giving him the raise is still better than saying you want to give him a raise, but not actually doing it. I don't think the average fan had Kill's compensation on their radar until Teague started talking about it...zero upside, all downside.
