Few football programs have gone through what Minnesota did in the past year.
Ten players were suspended before the Holiday Bowl for alleged participation in a sexual assault.
That resulted in a short player boycott and the eventual firing of coach Tracy Claeys. Some of the players were expelled, some were suspended for a year and others were cleared.
The Gophers were quick to hire P.J. Fleck, who coached Western Michigan to a 13-1 record in 2016.
Fleck is known as a master motivator, and that has been showcased on “Being P.J. Fleck,” a show on ESPNU.
“P.J. is a proven winner and a strong leader,” Minnesota athletic director Mark Coyle said after hiring Fleck. “He’s built a unique, positive culture that gets the best out of his students on the field and in the classroom. His infectious energy and passion make him a terrific coach and dynamic recruiter.”
