In three years at NIU he had 2 wins against teams with a winning record...excellent running the ball, not so good at passing and average defenses.

why do I feel like we just hired a fat, yellow toothed Glen Mason with a porn star mustache?

If laughter heals, thanks. I've been feeling crappy since I heard about this hire. Then I read your post. funny. But, now I feel crappy, again.

I believe it was posted in another thread he beat 3 teams with winning records this year alone. Including al goldens temple owls

Kill had more close losses (-3 points or less) then any coach in D-1 Football over the last 3 seasons. He had a great record for what he had to work with. He gets more out his players than most D-1 coaches that I follow, in my opinion. He makes teams better then they are just by being the coach. Not many can say this. This is a good call, and gutsy by Maturi.

One can argue whether or not Kill is the right guy. However, you cannot call this gutsy on Maturi's part. He likely was forced into this hire due to 15 or so guys saying no, or asking for more money than the U could or wanted to play. Let's also not forget that Maturi is done in 2012 with no apparent desire to continue (if even asked). Since his job is apparently not on the line due to this hire, there is no risk for Maturi if it doesn't work out. He won't be here.

Kill is like Gardy or Burnsie, he can get more out of his players then most coaches, that is the true test of a good coach - "Does he make the team better because he is coach"? With Kill that answer is yes, you will see...Give him a chance...His team will have discipline and that makes up for a lack of talent. Look at Jimmy V 1984 NCAA basketball Champions, This guy can bring the same enthusiasm to MN footballl.

I am very afraid that Kill is like Gardy or Burnsie, how many titles did they win? Exactly what I am worried about with Kill. Every other big ten team except us and Indiana have won the big ten since I have been born (1974), can we just please contend for it once? I will trade ten 8 win seasons for 9 twelve loss seasons and one big ten championship.

I just did the legwork on 2008, 2009, and 2010. I count exactly two wins against FBS teams with a winning record. Those were against Temple and Toledo this season. Over the three years at NIU, Kill's teams won two out of 14 games against teams with a winning record.

Wow.

Trying to think positive

Kill is not the guy I was hoping for. But, having said that, NIU is probably the best college football team in Illinois right now. I think they would beat the Illini and Northwestern. He got NIU into the top 25 this year. You never see MAC teams ranked. I'm going to try to be optimistic.

Sadly, there's no other option at this point. Besides suicide.

Gardenhire: 6 AL Central titles in 9 years. Just one sub-.500 season.

Nah...this will work out. I think he'll be at least as successful as Glen Mason. NIU is a pretty well-coached team. True, they lost the MAC championship game and they shouldn't have. But they are the best team in Illinois right now. They lost to the Illini in Sept in a close match, but I think they'd beat the Illini today.

Correction . . .

Illinois beat them this year. Until they lost their quarterback, Northwestern was clearly better than NIU and probably still better after. I don't want to put NIU down, but there is a difference between the Big Ten and the MAC.

Is it in the water to hate a guy before he performs?

Cough... McNabb... Cough.

I was told by a college basketball coach once that if the president, or AD leave it's time to pack it up and move on. The coach told me that every AD wants his guys in place. Once you have turn over above you it's just a matter of time until you're out the door.

At the time of the firing we had an out going president, and still have a lame duck AD. I will always feel this had more to do with swinging and missing on top level coaches than the state of the program. Still if Kill comes in with the idea that he has a chance to do something special here he could do great things.

stanger

al central titles are like MAC titles, imagine if gardy could win one that matters like the american league championship or world series?

How are his defenses average?

In his three seasons at Northern Illinois he finished #1 in Total Defense twice and #1 in Scoring Defense twice.

This is a legitimate question that I am afraid will we will never know the answer.
