The NFL is strictly entertainment. Like WWE.

The owners decide who will win the big games. Playoffs and Super Bowl.

Countless examples in the last 20 years or so, since it because obvious.

That 'incomplete pass' in the Vikings-Rams game is just another example. Of course they want to appease LA due to the wildfire situation. Same as New Orleans when they 'beat' the Vikings in the 2010 NFCC.

It's about billions of dollars and the fun of being powerful. Owners aren't like fans. They're from somewhere else too...same as how Coyle came from Syracuse; you think he gives a crap about the Gophers??

The part about sports being entertainment: that's what Bud Grant always said when asked whether it bothered him that he came up empty in four Super Bowls. It's conceptually true, of course, but sports are a heck of a lot more entertaining when...
1. Your team manages to win a championship in 60 plus years of operation, and
2. When the sport has high integrity and is not just professional wrestling. I've never been into pro wrestling. If I want fictional stories, there are many, many excellent movies, TV shows, and books I could consume.

I remember attending a pro wrestling card in the Twin Cities back in the early 80's. my boss at the time and I went just for shites and giggles. we're sitting there (I think at the old St. Paul Civic Center) and right behind us were some guys who were absolutely bought in. they thought this stuff was 100% legitimate. my boss and I were listening to these guys all night and trying not to burst out laughing. they were more entertaining than what was happening in the ring.

point being - pro wrestling may be entertainment, but some people really love it.

as far as pro sports - just because officiating is inconsistent does not mean that the results are predetermined.

the simplest answer is usually the best - in this case, the simplest answer is that we have a lot of blown calls in games because the refs just aren't that good. if a ref misses a facemask penalty, that does not mean it's a fix - it just means he missed the penalty.

Anyone who thinks the simplest answer to explain that the two worst intentional grounding non-calls I have ever seen in my life that go against the same team in back-to-back huge-consequence games is a coincidence of random blown calls has the mind of a child.

Think of the genius behind putting the dynasty in Kansas City rather than New York or Dallas.
It's like when Gary Anderson missed on purpose. Not only did he miss on purpose, he's so damn good that he missed by mere inches to the left.

I'm gonna go ahead and put this thread in a file I have labeled: "Incredibly Stupid (even for Gopherhole)".

As soon as Gavin Newsome gets off his nightly face time with Mark Coyle, he calls Roger Goodell to plot who will win that week's games. Everyone knows this.

He really screwed up, not making sure the Chargers won. The LA fires were only good for one fixed game, I guess.

Please do 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

While listening to this quintessential numeric ditty.

I've loved Paul Simon (& Art obviously) going back to my dad's vinyl & 8tracks even. What's always bothered me about 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, is that he actually only lists 5 "methods" in the song.

That's only 10%. Feels like false advertising. Maybe there's an extended demo version out there.

The Inna Gadda Da Vida version:

...time to find a new pal, Al
...don't be a slob, Robb
...ready for a new piece of candy, Randy
...no need to eat crow, Joe
...time to dodge 'er, Roger
...find someone slim, Jim
etc, etc, etc.

What buried the full version was the inclusion of the "slim, Jim" line. . .turned into a whole legal thing with General Mills, who owned the Slim Jims brand at that time. Simon was adamant it remain, but ultimately legal prevailed and said it needed to be removed, to which Rhymin' Simon removed 45 methods in protest.

That was a fantastic "Behind the Music" episode.

For starters:

Those of you who think that it's actual competition:

Explain the 'incomplete pass' that took away the Vikings' touchdown that tied the score at 10-10.

It’s your Groove Theory, so the onus is on you to explain it, not us: see Russell’s Teapot - see link, in case you’re not familiar with that a analogy

The QB propelled the ball "forward" with his arm while maintaining control until released. That's an incomplete pass, by rule.

It was absolutely an incomplete pass. I think there's a reasonable argument for intentional grounding, but yeah it wasn't a fumble.

I agree, though I felt I needed to keep it simple for the audience asking for an explanation. Baby steps.

The NFL is a TV show, and it's the most popular TV show in the country, by a mile. The NFL crushes every other league in ratings, revenue and popularity. And it's the most well run league in the country.

I've never understood the hate for Roger Goodell; I know, a lot of the legacy media wants to say "rich people BAD", etc but at the end of the day, Goodell is EXCEPTIONAL at his job. His job is to make the players rich, make the owners rich, grow the popularity of the game, et al.

Goodell is easily, and I mean EASILY, the best and most efficient/proficient Commissioner in any pro sport that we have. Whether anyone likes it or not, tough shit...

Well said, and Goodell's job isn't to make fans like him, it's to make the league a great product for fans to consume, which it is. Obviously there are other elements to his job too but yeah I don't think he's a bad guy by any means.
