The new linebacker coach:

Wow, quite the vagabond lifestyle these assistant coaches lead! Sixth coaching stop since '04. Looks like good credentials, and with all of those stops I suspect (hope) he has built a lot of recruiting connections.

So far I have no complaints with Kill's staff. He stuck with many of his trusted assistants from NIU mixed in with a couple holdovers here and a very experienced LB coach. Coach Kill seems to be approaching this in a very calculated way.

Couple points...
-was he Gutey's D Co-ord at Minn?
-was his time at FL all under Zook?
-interesting he would leave Kansas that quickly

Go Gophers! No Cosgrove anywhere to be found...a good thing.

WOw you should check out his profile, he was the Defensive Coordinator from 1986-1988 here at Minnesota, so he is not a person who is new.

He was at Kansas in '09, not '10. I assume he was out when Mangino was canned. I assume this means he was out of work in '10.

His years in MN would have coincided with Gutekunst's first three years (86-88), and his Flordia years would have been during Zook's tenure.

In reading about him I have come across a couple places that mention him having recruiting ties to many Kansas JCs. He himself is an alum of Hutchinson (KS) JC.

His KU bio from '09 holds more info:

And his ASU bio from earlier years:

If my memory serves me correctly, Miller coached the defensive backs when he coached at Minnesota.

Go Gophers!!

It's odd that Kill's not bringing his LB coach from N Ill as I thought that guy has been with him for many years. Though maybe that guy found a different job or is staying on at N Ill for their new coach - he is the interim head coach right now for their bowl game. Or maybe he's coming over in a different role.

It was announced yesterday the existing LB coach would be staying at NIU. He's actually the HC for NIU at the Humanitarian Bowl this weekend.

Good stuff

Nice, I like this hire, tons of experience.

Solid list of experience but kind of regressed going from D coordinator for all those years to Linebacker coach for several years.

On the KU comment, that is what happens when the head coach (Mangino) is fired.

Seems to have an impressive resume, but I know nothing about him. I heard (Twitter) he may also get "Associate Head Coach" title.

In case you don't want to bother with a link:

Some folks are just better position guys. Doesn't have to be a regression.

If this guy coached under the Zooker its probably safe to think that he might be a solid recruiter.

Guys Bill Miller is BIG TIME! He has been DC or LB coach for some big time programs. He is also a very good recruiter. He was one of three coaches that KU fans did not want to see go when Mangino was fired. When KU lost Miller, they lost 4* Geneo Grissom to Oklahoma. Miller will have a lot of ties to Florida, Kansas, Kansas JUCO's, and I'm sure other spots (this ain't his first rodeo).

I'm sure his ties to Coach Kill/Kansas is why he landed at Minnesota. He is a native of Hutchinson, Kansas... they play some good ball there. KU got Ben Heeney from there this year and of course last year Geneo Grissom went to Oklahoma and Deveon Dinwidde went to Kansas State.

Congrats on a excellent hire... the guy is more than capable of being your DC and I think Assistant Head Coach is a very smart move.

Nice. Great to hear about this.

Could it be that we are assembling a coaching staff of the future?! And when I say future, I mean for 8+ years.

It's a very good move if it's going to happen. I believed from day one give coach Kill a chance. He's won at all the programs he's coached at. Plus he's been a defensive and offensive coordinator in the college ranks. The guy has a vast amount of expereince. Way too many people were ready to jump off a bridge when his name was first mentioned.

The NIU LB coach staying at NIU is not a mystery. He stated publicly he wants to be a head coach soon. He can't even be a dcoordinator here soon, and Kill does not like turnover.

Among the coaches Miller has worked for are: Jimmy Johnson and Pat Jones (Oklahoma State), Chris Ault (Nevada), Butch Davis (Miami), Nick Saban (Michigan State), Ron Zook (Florida), Dirk Koetter (Arizona State), and Steve Kragthorpe (Louisville

impressive indeed. this is a great hire

What excites me is that he's a truely good linebackers coach coming into a situation where he has a lot of good young talent. I am really excited about the potential for great linebacker play starting next fall.

Correct, including me. I love Kill's organization, experience and drive, and I hope he is great. If he can get good players he will be terrific, and I am not counting him out there anymore either.

Miller recruited me to the U from JuCo in '88 under Gute. He was the DB coach then and I was an O-Lineman. He obviously did a great job of recruiting me since i had many other offers from good D-1 schools and he wasn't my position coach. He was a good guy and my friends who played in the secondary for him loved him and thought he was a great coach. with his experience since then i believe he will be a great hire. Good move by Kill!

So Rivals was wrong about him being the DC at Minnesota.

Yep, I believe so. It was a bit before my time as I would have been real young but all of his bios that i've seen described him as d backs coach.
