Looking at the BCS standings after 12 weeks - a good measure - Gopher opponents are #8 (Ohio State), 9 (Iowa), 11 (Penn St) and 19 (California), and Wisconsin is 26th in the coaches' poll. Those are five good teams and we were very much in several of those games. Now we're going to a bowl where we might play Oklahoma or Missouri. Maybe things are not as bad as they seemed.

Really, it comes down to Illinois. If we had won that game, finished 7-5, and were looking at an Alamo Bowl date with Oklahoma or Texas Tech, the perception of this season would've been completely different. Losing to the Illini changed everything, and we all knew it at the time. Just another in the long list of woulda/shoulda in the history of Gopher football.

You're right to a point. It wasn't just the Illinois game, but if we'd been able to score about 4 more offensive touchdowns in November, it would have changed a lot of perceptions. One more against Illinois gets us a win. A couple against SDSU makes it a tolerable win. And one against Iowa makes that loss feel a lot less depressing.

I agree but the following two weeks also put a big damper on the season. Sorry howeda I didn't read your post at first. You nailed it.

Yes, but we didn't so it's sort of meaningless to play this game. I hope and assume Brewster is coming back, but what gets me is how the offense regressed the second half of the year and how we continued to make silly mistakes. I'm really looking for improvement in the bowl game. The hell with waiting for next year to see if things can be fixed. The players have had a chance to take a break, especially Weber; the staff has had a chance to evaluate their approach and strategy; and they'll have time to put in a game plan and practice it. It's going to be really depressing if the offense again is completely inept.

Illinois hurt. But Wisconsin hurt every bit as much. That game was lost entirely because of mistakes. This should have/ could have been an 8-3 team going into Iowa.

Why don't some of you complainers just drop the line and tell the truth? "I want to win, I want to win, I want to win. Oh, my God, I want to win."

This was a season of missed opportunities for sure...the disturbing thing is the regression we've seen the past two years in the second half....good teams get better as the year goes on...they learn from their mistakes, gel better, leverage experience, eliminate errors, etc. We haven't done these things. Some say poor coaching. Some say new systems, coordinator instability etc. Draw your own conclusions on why.

I totally understand your point and have no problem with you making it. I can see that side of it. But I also understand the argument that the 6-6 record and getting to a bowl game isn't as good as it seems.

The good things about being a drunk are:

1. I never have a hangover because I never sober up;

2. I attend a lot fewer meetings than alcoholics attend;

3. I have a healthy breakfast everyday...grain group;

4. I laugh at everything;

5. My liver is not green yet;

6. Norm from Cheers is my best friend;

7. Sam from Cheers is my best friend;

8. Cliff from Cheers is my best friend;

9. Frazier from Cheers is my best friend;

10. Carla from Cheers is my best friend;

11. Life is great.

There has never been a drunk who sees things as clearly as you Don.
