The critisism of the double bye in the Big East is ridiculous. The coaches' argument might hold water if some of the teams that received double byes lost to teams that had already won twice to reach the quarterfinals......but that HAS NEVER HAPPENED.
The only times teams with a double bye have lost is when they got beat by teams that had only won one game in the tournament.
Think about it. It is the same exact scenario as in the BTT when a team seeded 6-11 wins their first game and then beats one of the teams seeded that had received a single bye. One team has played and won a game - and then beats a team that hasn't. Same deal.
Almost every conference tournament has teams that get a bye. ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, etc. It is all set up the same. The only difference is that the Big East has an extra round at the beginning of the tournament. But since none of the teams seeded 9-16 have ever made it to the semifinals the coaches' argument is moot.
The reality is that the Big East is an extremely competitive league with many solid teams - the double bye has nothing to do with it.
The Big East coaches need to be silenced on this argument, and intelligent people need to realize that the fact that there is a preliminary round in the Big East is irrelevent since none of those teams has ever advanced and beaten a team with a double bye. Therefore, the double bye turns into a single bye, which is how every other conference runs its tournaments.
If you really don't want a double bye then lose a couple more games in the regular season.
