Well, remember back when it was announced that the Gophers were going to have a home and home with USC? I was pretty excited but at the same time a little worried because perhaps the program wouldn't be ready to face such an imposing foe already in 2010.
Of course a lot has happened since then. Suddenly USC looks quite mortal. When the game was scheduled I was worried the Gophers could lose 50-0 given USC's long lock on the top 10 and yearly flirtation with the national championship. Instead, here is what should have been an opportinity to beat USC straight up (not exactly impressive with their shaky wins over Hawaii and Virginia) but it is again looking like that 50-0 score is a possibility given the implosion against South Dakota. In other words, what has changed from concern about how much the Gophers would have improved by now has turned to dispair about how far they have fallen. I suppose in some sort of twisted way this is like losing to a very beatable Michigan team and then having them drop off the schedule for the year that they completely suck.
Anyway, what should have been an opportunity to show off the Bank and enjoy all of what is great about college football, has now degenerated into what may be an ugly scene of 'fire Brewster' chants, a pummeling on the field, and perhaps empty seats left in the wake of that ugly SD loss. With all this doom and gloom (and I can't help but share it on many levels), the thick-and-thin fan in me will still be looking for some spark to ignite and the team to shock the world. I won't give up on that, no matter how unlikely it seems. And, I sure hope there are no "fire" anyone chants. Brewster may not be the right coach for the future of the team, but gameday in the stadium is no time/place to express that.
