Sports on Earth: The Best Teams Ever in College Football (1936 Minnesota t84)

From Sports on Earth:

You'll see Bierman's name on this list several times, meaning he's probably historically underrated as the leader of a golden age of Minnesota football. He won five national championships, this being his third straight. In the first year of the AP poll, the Golden Gophers started at No. 1, lost the top spot to Northwestern upon losing to the Wildcats 6-0, then won the title after Northwestern fell 26-6 to Notre Dame. SRS says the first AP voters got it right by ignoring head-to-head (Northwestern finished seventh in the AP poll despite owning the same 7-1-0 record), and modern TCU fans will surely agree that one close head-to-head loss doesn't necessarily mean the winner is the better team over the course of an entire season.

Note: 51-75 will be on 7/17, 26-50 on Monday on 7/20, 1-25 on 7/21

It would be funny to see how great college teams of old compare to today's teams in size and speed and strength. Natural selection has yielded much bigger, faster players today.

Normally I don't like the "bigger faster stronger" arguments, but if you're going back to the 30's they definitely apply

It is the 1934 team that I would rank the best Gopher team of all time. Grantland Rice thought it was the best of all time.

In part 2, 1934 ranked 68 & 1941 ranked 59.
