As P.J. Fleck stood at his postgame press conference Saturday, reflecting on a rollercoaster season that’s seen the Gophers nearly lose each of their three season-opening non-conference games and then turn into a surprise juggernaut in the Big Ten, the head coach spoke some truth about what it takes for just about any team to win its first eight games.

“As you look back at our season, there’s all these little quirky little things that have happened,” Fleck said. “Chris Autman-Bell having a size 11 (shoe) instead of 13, he wouldn’t have put his foot down against Fresno State. The one-handed catch by Rashod Bateman. … There’s hundreds of plays that I can think of that made the season what it is, and in a season like this, you’re going to have to have plays like that.”

Fleck’s right. Every team — even those in the rarified Alabama air — needs players to step up in big spots and some good fortune to go its way to keep the wins piling up.
