Senior linebacker Carter Coughlin, watching from the sidelines, saw what he’s seen for four years, happy another part of the country could be introduced to a future NFL Draft pick.

“I was like, ‘Welcome to Tyler Johnson, SEC,” Coughlin said. “That just shows what Tyler can do. A play like that, I was super excited, but I wasn’t surprised. Tyler made huge plays all throughout the game. That’s the type of player he is.”

That Johnson was playing in the game was against the trend of today’s college football star. He could have left after his junior year, after piling up 1,169 yards and 12 touchdowns in the Big Ten. Not only did he come back for his senior year, he didn’t hesitate when it came to playing in a bowl game — he didn’t see an injury risk, but a chance to finish what he started with his Gophers teammates.

“It was my last chance to go out there and give everything I’ve got,” Johnson said. “To be able not to represent only myself but my family and my community, one last chance at the school that I decided to go back to four years ago. Being able to do that, right away I knew I was going to play in this game, especially since it was one of the best defensive programs in the country. I was looking forward to it. Just happy we came out with the win.”

Go Gophers!!

Tyler Johnson will be a role model for Minnesota Football players (high school and college) for many years to come. Stayed home to play for the gophers, stayed his senior season and got his degree even though he could have been drafted his junior year, and stayed to play in the bowl game even if it meant risking injury.

I look forward to seeing him excel in the NFL.
