#1 Texas HS punter Grant Carlson

With Peter Mortell graduating, how confident is the Gophers ST coaching staff with Logan McElfresh and Jacob Herbers?

Current Boston College commit Grant Carlson (#1 punter in TX according to Scout) has expressed interest in the Gophers (Scout, Rivals).

We cannot overlook the importance of our special teams play. Will Claeys and company extend an offer to this kid?

We have to replace the 2015 Holder of the Year as well. Can he hold balls?

Grant Carlson? Sounds like a hockey player! Is he the son of one of the "Hansen Brothers"?

I'm not sure how much confidence there is in McElfresh or Herbers but it sounds like Santoso has been a very solid punter in practice and would be in line for the job right now. I think there are bigger needs than punter with the available scholarships but we could see a pwo in the class. We have offered 2017 East Ridge K/P Grant Ryerse and I wouldn't bet on seeing scholarship K/P in back to back classes.

I forgot about Grant Ryerse.

The other big Mortell question...

Who replaces him as holder. Replacing the Holder of the Year is a big chore.

They aren't going to offer a scholarship when they have three guys that are very good...I repeat...very good, and are covered for the next 4 years. Look for a walk on in 2017.

They already have a scholarship offer out to Ryerse in the 2017 class. I think he is more of a kicker than punter right now but I believe he does do both for East Ridge.

You are correct. A decent program does not need to waste a schollie on a punter.

The tweet was funny when Mortell wrote it, not that funny to read it the 10th+ time it was written on Gopherhole

Wrong- first two programs I looked at- OSU and MSU have 1 each and OSU will have 2 on scholarship next year.

People discounting the importance of both kicking and punting make no sense.
Especially with a running team like the Gophers have been, the field position game is a vital part of your strategy and having an effective punter is key.

Solid and reliable kicking is also essential, this year alone the Gophers scored 28% of their total points on kicks (51 points on FGs, 31 on XP's)

Well if those two decent teams have them then all decent teams must have scholarship punters too.

Didn't say all- just had time to look up a couple of respected teams to see if they indeed did have any punters on scholarship. I'm sure you could have looked up several others to see if this finding was due to a sampling bias and enlighten us- but you'd rather be a d!ck.
