For ten years we've had either Weber or Leidner, always described as "tough" QBs, admired for their grit. Nelson was in there briefly, but it's mostly been two tough, competitive guys neither of whom were (are) reliable passers and neither of whom were natural runners (remember Weber running all the time in Brewster's new system in 2007?). Every team in the B10 seems able to come up with a decent passing QB once in a while, except us. Why not?

I think it is because we are all accepting of mediocre QBs. It is our fault.

Ya, I'd prefer to hear a Gopher quarterback described as "electric", or "impressive in his accuracy"...

Is the rule now that in order to post a new thread the premise has to be absurd outright?

You simply cannot compare Weber and ML - Weber basically has double his passing stats. Yeah, yeah - Decker...whatever. Weber made a pro roster and was an NFL caliber player. ML simply is not. It is not just his poor accuracy - it is also his poor decision making. I give ML respect for making the most of his abilities - but he is mid level college QB at most while Weber was NFL quality. I can only imagine what Weber could have accomplished if his development was not stunted by incompetent coaching.

Your analysis of ML7 may be on.
Your analysis of AW8 is not.

"Your analysis of AW8 is not. "

He did not make an NFL roster, thereby being the pure definition of NFL caliber? Strange, I seem to remember him doing just that. Also, as I stated - his career states are 2x that of ML. They cannot be compared.

His career "states" are "2x" that of ML because he threw twice almost twice as many passes as Leidner has. Look at the average/% stats (completion %, yards/attempt, TD:Int ratio, QB rating) - they are nearly identical. So yeah, I think they can be compared.

Glen Mason and Adam Weber sure have benefited from some revisionist history around here...

Having watched every game played by both Weber and Leidner they are unequivocally in the same bucket.

While I agree there are plenty of parallels between Weber and Leidner if I had to pick one of them to lead my offense I would go with Weber and I wouldn't even hesitate.

I agree with this.

He threw 2x the passes because he kept drives alive and did not make such horrible decisions (granted, he did make a few). If Weber did it over an 8 year career - you would have a point but as they both did it in 4, your point is moot. "3 and Out" Leidner is a good leader and a tough kid - no taking that away from him - he is just not a good QB at this level.

This is a ridiculous post. What if I said my top stat for rating a QB is INTs?

Threw 2x the passes - not because of system - but because he kept drives alive. Wow are you clueless.

"Threw 2x the passes - not because of system"

Yeah, their system was completely different during Weber's years...they didn't put as much emphasis on 3 and out back then....I don't think you quite understand football.

The Gophers averaged about 31.8 pass attempts per game during Weber's four years. In 2013, the team averaged 20.5 pass attempts per game. In 2014, the team averaged 19.5 pass attempts per game. In 2015, it was it was 32.8 and so far in 2016 it's 30.6. Weber started every game for 4 years during which they threw a lot, while Leidner has started 2+ seasons while they overall threw much less and in just ONE year exceed Weber's average over a sum total of FOUR years. But please, tell us more about how we don't quite understand football. Math sure is hard.

They throw less because Leidner makes horrible decisions and him throwing leads to 3 and outs...did you not watch the last 2 games?

This. But, you forgot Max Shortell and DCT.

They throw less because they like to run the ball a lot in general...did you not watch the last 5+ seasons?

Not sure why you keep bringing up the 3 and outs. If the offense under Leidner has so many more of them than with Weber, then why has the offense averaged about the same amount of points per game?

Weber
07 - 26.3
08 - 23.2
09 - 20.9
10 - 23.2

Leidner
13 - 25.7 (he didn't start all the games)
14 - 28.4
15 - 22.5
16 - 30.4

I think points per possession would be a better judge. Have no idea what that would look like.

The Gopher Hole Rules:

Rule #12 The current QB always sucks

Rule #26 The former QB gets better over time. the longer since he played, the better he gets.

Mitch is out for next week... and I'm pretty sure his spirals are better than I remember!
