I'm curious of what others think about taking a 6 and/or 4 year old to the game Saturday. Basically four hours out in the 18 degree temps. My 6 year old really wants to go as he has been to each game with me.

Do it. You can always bail if it gets too cold. But you'll regret not going if you don't.

Layers
Focus on feet, hands and head.
Bring something warm to sit on. Butts always get cold.
If all else fails, pour him a little vodka (kidding, kidding).

In some countries they let babies sleep outside in the middle of winter. Bring them!

Det finns inget dåligt väder bara dåliga kläder.

Let them move around, too. Cheering loudly will help them stay warm. When we were kids we could play outside in the cold all day.

Bundle them up so they can barely move and they'll be good to go.

Slightly different circumstances, but I remember my dad taking me (then 8 years old) and my brother (6) to the 1988 Civil War game in Corvallis. It was a typical November day in Oregon - cold and very, very wet. But my beloved Beavers beat the Ducks for the first time in 14 years, we lost my brother's jacket in the scramble to run onto the field where the goal posts were torn down, and I was a college football fan for life.

Take them to the game.

Early Christmas! The older couple that sits next to me at the games, who through conversation realized I know their daughter, just called and offered me their tickets. I get to bundle the whole family up and go to our first game together. Pumped!

I'm taking my 7 year old son and am worried about the same thing. Just layers, layers and more layers.

I took my kids when they were about 5 & 7 to a Colorado Rockies game one year when the Rockies were lousy. We were playing Greg Maddux in one of his Cy Young award years. We went to the pitching station, the batting station where the kids pitched and swung, they went and got cotton candy…then another trip for hot dogs…the weather was nice, we had good seats. They watched Digger the mascot…the big screen stuff…then in about the 7th inning…the score was tied, Maddux was still pitching…the bases were loaded and there were two outs…the crowd was holding it breath…and my daughter says: "Mom, can we go home now?" Everyone around us just started laughing. We stayed one more out and left and I rode home listening on the radio. It is not the weather but the attention spans of kids that might not make it the best idea. If they get bored and want to leave early and it's a good game…? Take them to a game that won't kill you to leave early or go to late otherwise you'll just be mad at them for not having adult attention spans.

Not sure what the big deal is. My son (now 8) has to go outside every day in the winter unless temp is below zero, its not like they are not used to it. The key is dressing them in layers. Our son has gone to games for some time, the coldest probably low 30's, but we go out in the winter a lot.

The keys, layers as folks mentioned, with a good windproof jacket. Long underwear, etc. Also, put hand warmers in their gloves and they will love it (ours does). Our son wears a face / wind mask as well. If it were going to be 5 degrees, then I would be worried a bit more.. but 18 or 20 is cold because it hasnt been cold yet, but its not that cold. Plus hot chocolote in a souvenir cup!

This all said, it depends on if your son or daughter is used to going outside when its cold. If they do normally, they will be fine. If they never go outside when its cold, all the layers in the world won't make them happy.

Have the kids be active, and jumping around cheering. That is how I stay warm!

Layers, hot chocolate, and if it gets too cold you can always take a walk over to Goldy's Locker Room and get out of the elements. I think jumping around and cheering will be great. Also before the game if you aren't tailgating, the Alumni Center is a great place to keep warm.

Those little hand warmers make a big difference for me...in the boots and in the mittens and the rest should be easy...maybe bring a blanket too for the kids.

Games and weather like this is how we depussify ourselves from the Dome! Starting playing and winning in big games in inclement weather will harden the fan base.

I would suggest keeping them from sweating in the car ride. My dad always blasts the heat on the way to the deer stand when that sweat cools you cool.

Would it really be that difficult to place electric outlets below each seat? The U could then sell electric jump suits......officially licensed with Gopher logo of course.:cool02:

And the jump suits in the visitor's section "accidentally malfunction" and turn theirs into cold suit.

Don't do it if it is their first game, huge difference between going out to play in the snow and sitting in a cold stadium for three hours, you want to turn them into Gopher fans not turn them off from the experience, they will not enjoy it.

I've been to a ton of games in single digit temps, it was something you survived not enjoyed.

Once a year MMMbrace the cold.

Love it and live with it.
