If Iowa, Purdue and Indiana lose one more they are out of the bowl picture. Michigan St. needs to lose next week to Northwestern and the following week to the Gophers and they are out. That leaves the Gophers with the 5th Big Ten bowl spot and a trip to Tempe, certainly possible.

Let's do it! Nothing like getting picked by default, lol...

You're making this more difficult than it needs to be.

If we win against Michigan State we go to Tempe. If we lose, we go to Houston. Any other scenario is very unlikely.

Gopherprof has it exactly right. Beat Michigan State and we jump them in bowl priority. Lose to them and we go to Houston to face off against a middle of the pack Big 12 team.

Either one will be great for the program.

Sorry, but I'm not buying it. The Gophers lose in every time when it comes to a bowl challenge with a Big Ten team, even with Northwestern and certainly Michigan State. I've seen it too many times over the years. We will get the lowest bowl spot we deserve, as usual. Tempe is our best shot right now. A huge upset in Lincoln and we could move up to the Gator Bowl, but Northwestern still could get the nod over us.

Going to the Heart of Dallas bowl would at least be a January 1 bowl. Sure, it's not what people have in mind when they think of a NYD bowl, but it would be cool to play on NYD.

Team record, head-to-head result....that stuff doesn't matter. If Michigan State is eligible, they will get chosen for Tempe ahead of us. The Spartans have never played there, whereas the Gophers played there three times in the last six years, and MSU is the bigger name. Quite honestly, I'd rather see us play in Houston, anyway, just for a change of scenery.

Don't they have to pick a seven-win team over a six-win team?

I would rather play in prime time in December than at noon on New Year's Day in Dallas. If I had a choice I would choose Houston for two reasons:

1. Winnable
2. Primetime

No. That used to be a rule for at-large bids, but it has since changed. The only rules for Big Ten bowl selection apply to the Capital One and Outback bowls, which cannot choose a team with 2+ fewer victories, and the 4th-place bowl (either the Gator or BW3, depending on the year) must select the Big Ten Championship Game loser, if still available.

Just so we all know, we are having a thread on what bowl game we are going too, with two weeks left in the season. Feels pretty damn good to me.

It is unfortunate that the bowl system has really messed up the whole mystique of playing on New Years Day. Now there are crappy games played after New Years day and even within the conference the Bowls are not played in the order of selection. Now to judge the quality of bowl the team ends up on you have to grade it in terms of spot in the selection order as opposed to the date the game is played on.

I agree with that. In year two of Kill era we are going to a bowl. That hasn't happened with Lou Holtz was coaching here. And I am very confident that Kill will be staying for this bowl game, which gives me much greater hope for the future of Gopher football than in 1985.

Did you forget the part where Holtz had the number one recruiting class in the nation headed to MN before he bolted? He would have returned us to national prominence. But he left and the rest is history. Just remember your history when making glass half full comments...

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Tim Brewster had some very good recruiting classes too. You need a decent coach to get a team anywhere. Brewster and Gutekunst were not up to the task as Big Ten coaches. I'd say Kill is but I'm not saying he's bringing a #1 recruiting class anytime soon, never said that. What I am saying is that we have a good coach who is likely to stay for a while, that's all.

Look going to a bowl is great and better than not going to a bowl. But are you forgetting that Brewster had us in bowl games in both his 2nd and 3rd years so it is not like the simple act of getting to a bowl in today's college football is that big of an accomplishment.

Again getting a bowl certainly better than where we have been the past few years but it is just a minor step up the food chain from a bottom feeder to a lower portion of the middle of the pack. Real test comes in the next few years when we find out if Kill can take that next step that has eluded MN football since the 60's.

Agree wholeheartedly. As long as this is part of a progression to something bigger, then it's something to get excited about. Going to a bowl beats the heck out of not going to a bowl, but once Duke plays in a bowl this season, it will mean that each and every school from an AQ-BCS conference will have played in a bowl game during the past ten years. WSU has the longest drought, last playing in a bowl in 2003 (Holiday Bowl).

Purdue will be favored against Illnois next week and likely against Indiana at home the following week. Those very likely wins would make them bowl eligible AND gets them to 3-5 in the B10. Gophers very likely could still end up in Dallas (which is cheaper, faster, and easier to get to from Sioux Falls than Houston or Tempe). Heck, it's not even completely impossible that the Gophers end up in Detroit yet if Purdue wins out and the Hawks pull off back-to-back miracles, but that aint goin' to happen.

there is a chance that only wisconsin goes to a bowl game from the leaders side. odd

I'm pulling for the NYD game. I know the houston bowl is a better bowl...but i can easily drive over for that game from FT Worth.

Not sure we'll be back in time for the Houston game from Christmas with family in Mpls.

Anyone know what the payouts are? I'd love to see us not have to scrape by to send the band and whole team!

Beat the college...where the'N' stands for knowledge!
