It seems to me, and I haven't read each and every post, that the majority of people on this board are dead set against Trestman. Please outline your reasons why he would not be a good candidate. I know some have raised a concern about the fact he's been away from the college game for some time, so there are doubts he would be able to recruit effectively. Is that the only concern????? What else is there not to like?

I know there seem to be some positives to me.

--As a native of Minnesota, if hired I see him keeping this job as long as we like him and he is successful. If he wins, we would finally have a coach who would be here for the long haul.

--As a native of Minnesota, even though he's been away for a while, shouldn't he still have contacts around the state to be able to recruit the home kids more effectively than anyone else has in the last 2 decades?

--I don't think anyone questions his X and O abilities. While blue chip talent is nice to have, how good is it really if your coach isn't an effective teacher. I think I'd actually feel more comfortable with Mark from the "teaching aspect" than many of the names currently being thrown about.

--Without a doubt he's well traveled, but wouldn't that also have exposed him to some quality coaches from which to put together a solid staff? Wouldn't he also have Dungy's expertise (if he wanted or needed it) in trying to put together a solid defensive staff.

--I know it is the CFL, but wouldn't two championship rings on your finger look good in a recruits home?

Having said all of that, I wouldn't say I'm all in for Trestman. But now that my top 3 coaches (Calhoun, Nieumatololo, Hoke) appear to be out, I'm looking at names again and I keep coming back to Mark. I would just like to know what so many of you find wrong with him.

I don't totally hate the idea. He certainly has a lot of coaching experience. It seems that the reasons people are upset are:

He's had very little head coaching experience, and very little college experience. Can he recruit?

His resume is that of a job hopper, or someone who gets fired a lot. I disagree with this opinion. If you look at many of the teams he worked for, the offenses (especially the QB) put up excellent numbers - some career bests. Problem was, when the HC was fired, out went the whole staff, including Trestman.

The main reason people seem to hate him is this.
"Would he be a candidate if he weren't a native Minnesotan with ties to the U?"

The answer is undoubtably "no." That he's constantly being mentioned for this reason alone does rub me the wrong way as well. It's the provincial "one of us" attitude that I find so prevalent here (and I'm a lifelong resident). My friends and I used to call this "The Sid Pick."

Who says he is more likely to stay here than anyone else? He probably is, but being from here is no guarantee.

He hasn't been part of the MN HS scene at all. So assuming he has great MN HS football contacts might be a stretch. And lets say he does...I'm not sure how being a pro coach in other parts of the US and in Canada who happens to be from MN would make him a better MN recruiter than a current college coach who is familiar with the ins and outs of the current college recruiting game. Being good at recruiting means you are good at building relationships and contacts in the HS FB community.

I seem to recall a great pro X and O strategist who could adapt to the college game. Think he coached at Notre Dame. Being out of the college game for a long time is nothing to ignore and football knowledge doesn't trump that by default.

Certainly possible, but since he is well travelled mostly in the pro ranks that means his contacts are likely to be pro guys. Will they have good college recruiting and coaching backgrounds? Who knows?

No idea, but the snarky part of me really wants to point out that it is the CFL and there is a good chance many recruits won't even know it exists.

Your top 3 coaches are out only if you believe the rumors. As I've said in other threads, unsourced rumors should just be read and taken with a grain of salt. No one knows anything right now.

For me it all comes down to his lack of recent college coaching experience. If I have a choice between a pro guy (a Canadian pro guy at that) versus a current college coach with decent credentials my feeling is you go with the college guy. Face it, his name has not and will not come up for ANY other college coaching job out there. The ONLY reason he's being talked about is because he's "a Minnesota man". I'm not sure how being "one of us" (whatever that means) makes you a good candidate to be a BCS coach.

Well, in fairness, it did come up for the Miami job as well, though he was lumped in with a dozen other potential candidates. But he's one of "them" too.

Thanks. I just wanted to see what folks thought and those things that have been pointed out are valid. Trestman isn't exactly high on my list but if the rumors that most of the folks so far have told us no are true, Maturi will have to look at other options. We could end up with Mark or Horton, and I'm not sure that either would necessarily be a bad choice, just a scary one initially.

Having said all of that, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for Calhoun, even though I may have a better shot with the lottery ticket sitting in my car.

"Would he be a candidate if he weren't a native Minnesotan with ties to the U?"

The answer is undoubtably "no."

ESPN said this about the Miami coaching vacancy... "Sources said UM is considering a salary upwards of $3 million for Gruden. Even if Gruden isn't available, the new coach will be paid between $2-3 million. Others in serious consideration, according to Navarro, are Georgia's Mark Richt, who has said he's not interested, former USF coach Jim Leavitt, former UM offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, now with the Montreal Alouettes, and former Florida offensive coordinator Dan Mullen."

There is no sizzle but Trestman is quite well renowned in football circles. His work with Tebow speaks well to his coaching. No one bringing in Mason/Brewster to prepare someone for the NFL

See, this kind of info is what Trestman backers should be getting out there. Playing on his CFL success and MN ties won't excite anyone. Not saying an undefined about of work with Tebow does either...just trying to say that anyone who wants him certainly isn't doing a great job of convincing skeptics.

I was just throwing that out there as a buddy mentioned it to me on the week-end.

Just to clarify, I don't want Trestman either and am not enamored with his two Grey Cup wins. CFL is a very different game and Montreal has done quite well for some time.
