Christ has to envy the experience and depth we have.

MADISON – Season-ending injuries continue to take a toll on Wisconsin’s linebacker corps.

Redshirt sophomore outside linebacker Zack Baun, who worked with the No. 2 defense in camp, will miss the 2017 season because of a left-foot injury. He joins inside linebacker Jack Cichy (knee) on the season-ending injury list.

“He was doing really good things,” UW coach Paul Chryst said Sunday, adding Baun learned the results of a medical exam within the last two days.

Baun recorded a total of 15 tackles, including 3 1/2 for loss, in a reserve role last season. With Baun out, redshirt sophomore Tyler Johnson moves up to the No. 2 unit opposite junior-college transfer Andrew Van Ginkel. Johnson, 6 foot 3 and 243 pounds, is a walk-on from Menasha High School.

Tailback Taiwan Deal (right leg), wide receiver Kendric Pryor (face; moped accident), wide receiver George Rushing (left leg) and fullback Jake Whalen (head) are out for the opener.

UW also confirmed tailback Sam Brodner (left knee) and linebacker Mason Stokke (right leg) are out for the season.

Chryst talks No. 2 quarterback: So what led Chryst to name freshman Jack Coan as the No. 2 quarterback, ahead of redshirt freshman Kare’ Lyles.

“I’ve liked the progress that he has made (but) certainly has a ton more to learn and many ways to grow.”

Extra points: UW's starting inside linebackers are T.J. Edwards and EP walk on Ryan Connelly. The backups are oft injured Chris Orr and Arrington Farrar, who moved from safety.
