Teague threw out a relatively benign tweet yesterday afternoon, but I think it does give a glimpse into the impact that he views sports can have for a University's national brand:

"VCU was on CBS NATIONAL TV today. Who would have dreamed this 10 years ago? Athletics building a national brand!"

Go Gophers!!

He's totally right. People often view universitys in light of their athletics. While it is not at the core -it is what you see.

Much of why the student section needs to class it up at the home games.

That would be number one on my priority list.....

The student section reflects the student body and so does the team. Maybe this is a Kahler & Teague issue?

I still don't know what they are doing that is so awful.

I don't know if they are doing anything awful or not, but I just know that Duke fans have a bad rep. And its partially due to how their fans act at their home games. And I get the impression that people's opinion of Duke as a university is not as good as it could be as well, because of this view of its bb fans. Whether that is right to make that connection or not, it is made occasionally. That kind of stuff adds up.

For what it's worth, I view, and viewed as a prospective student, Duke university the complete opposite of how I viewed their fan base.

Where do you get that impression from? Who makes the occasional connection between the behavior of the students at basketball games and the quality and desirability of undergraduate, graduate and research programs at Duke? How is Duke's fundraising going?

Dukes fans make me like them more ... Their student section is usually clean (no F bombs can you believe it???) and are very creative and passionate. It is an awesome student section.

From people all over the country. Mostly cbb fans who don't like Duke, and I think I was pretty clear that it was only the occasional fan who makes the connection. I didn't even say I agreed with them, or that I even thought those people were intelligent. Just conveying a perception that I've gleaned from talking to sports fans from all over the nation, that's all.

And if someone thinks I'm saying something negative about Duke's academics, then they would be Assuming too much.

I don't like Duke personally, but because I have a good friend who is a Duke fan, and I respect him a great deal, it has been easy for me to look past their fans at their games and other Duke fans I've run into over the years and recognize Duke as a fine institution of higher learning.

A big part of the reason people hate Duke is the players and Coach K. IMO.

This is what we call a backpedal....

Anybody who would bring up the behavior of Duke basketball fans as a reflection of the quality of the institution couldn't dream of taking a seat in one of its classrooms.

Most people that hate/dislike Duke, do so because their BB team wins so much.

How did this thread become about student section behavior? VCU was on CBS NATIONAL TV because of their final four run and their overall recent WINNING ways (and to a lesser extent, fan friendly style). Teague is talking about the success of a major sports program building the national perception of a University. This has happened with UConn, Baylor (does ANYONE even talk about their scandal anymore?), Gonzaga, Boise State, TCU, and (gulp) Wisconsin among many others over the past 15 years. It may seem strange to some, but requests for admissions to schools always receive a significant boost when that school is coming off a significant season in football/men's basketball.

I would agree.. but I think the casual sports fan doesn't realize that some universities are well known for many other things (Wisconsin and Minnesota included).. especially for research and development. I hear where Teague is coming from though, but a final four for Minnesota will not alter the landscape for how the University of Minnesota is perceived outside of sports.. and money flowing in will not build a reasearch lab, etc. I think its overblown a bit.

Had you heard of VCU 5 years ago?

No, but I'm guessing most folks have heard of Minnesota 5 years ago, even outstide of Minnestoa. So as I said, I would agree.. but it doesn't mean much in the context of Teague at Minnesota. Sports isn't going to change the University much..

The reality of marketing, awareness, and advertising in today's sports crazy world makes Teagues comments totally accurate. Joel M and Brunicks never "Got it" and set this Athletic department back another generation. The lost generation under Joel M's "leadership" is never more apparent than today. We need improved facilities, a new Basketball coach, and to optimize our spending by streamlining the athletic department. This is needed just to be competitive. Do you think these problems just happened? It is refreshing to have some fresh blood come in to Minnesota with the goal to put us on the National Map with major college athletics as reality dictates.
