Teague on fundraising: "It's going really well it's just not really public right now"

per the Brainerd Dispatch:

Teague's concerns lie with practice facilities and providing his coaching staff a level playing field to compete against conference foes and national institutions. That means fundraising.

"It's going really well it's just not really public right now," said Teague. "We're doing a lot of behind-the-scenes fundraising. We'll announce soon as far as the campaign going live. That's kind of the fundraising world and how things work. We're in the silent phase right now. Fundraising takes time. You don't just go out and ask somebody for a million dollars. You have to cultivate them. You have to show them vision and show them the process. It's going very well. I feel very good about it. I wanted it done yesterday and that's the only thing I don't feel good about. It just takes awhile."

But Teague said he sees the next five years filled with major construction projects -- buildings that Gopher fans probably will never see.

"They're what recruits see and what our kids will operate in on a day-to-day basis," Teague said. "That is going to offer some great foundations for the future. It's what the kids really use and it's what our coaches get asked about by parents and recruits. That's what we've really struggled with for the last 10 years."

I'd like to believe this is more than just window dressing. My gut is telling me that there is little substance to this.

The thing about "silent phases" is that you don't hear much about them.

If I'm ever looking for a new job and the search isn't going well, I'm prepared to tell my wife that "I'm going through a silent phase right now."

To Translate Teague's statement into English: "We've been kissing the butts of a lot of fat cats, but nobody has coughed up a major donation yet, so we have to kiss more butts before we can tell anybody how fund-raising is going." I hope Norwood has a lot of chapstick.

That's a good thing since Sid has already bought a golden shovel for the ground breaking he scheduled for Dec 13th of this year.

Are you effing kidding? Sid with a piece or gold in his hands....and he would share it? If Sid had a golden shovel it would be locked up in safety deposit box with only him having access.

As the story told by Mike Max, Rosen, Reusse and many others goes....Sid went most days0 to the same restaurant for lunch. Had the same item and the bill was always $10.14. He would always tell the cashier he had an agreement with the mgr, and didn't have to pay the 14 cents.......I think they call it; being cheap... or was it tight?

Teague's statement absolutely could be true. It's entirely possible that fund raising is going well, but I understand the skepticism especially with the recent trip out to seen T.Denny.

It's sort of a tangent to the fun raising topic, but I wonder what happens if/when student athletes begin to be paid. Will the NFL or NBA ever start their own minor league that pays kids more than the colleges are willing/able to? Will college games become less popular when/if athletes are paid? If they are not paid and most of the best talent in the current revenue sports goes to minor league pro teams as opposed to college, will college football and college basketball go the way of college baseball? We've already seen a notable decrease in interest in attending college football around the country from students. To bring this back to the Gophers, I badly want to see these upgraded facilities come to fruition but part of me wonders if the landscape of college athletics will change drastically by the time these facilities become a reality.

Good point...Sid and his rusty borrowed shovel are at the ready!

The NFL and NBA already have minor leagues and they don't cost them a dime. It's called college football and college basketball.

The pros can deny 18-20 yr olds the right to play in their league and that's considered fine and dandy.

The colleges can give these same kids they opportunity to play the sport of their choice, in the part of the country of their choice. They also get professional coaching to help them hone their skills and a platform to showcase their skills for when they are 'eligible' to play for the 'pros'. For these opportunities the kids/student receive free room and board, and their tuition paid for. For these opportunities the colleges get sued.

It is not public until the public kicks in the door of the public university.

In other words, we finally get top of the line facilities, but by that time it's no longer a recruiting advantage because schools are bidding on players with plain old cash. (Of which we don't have much, since we just spent it on facilities!)

While I don't think that's likely to happen soon, it's a valid thought.

I don't think we'll ever have "top of the line facilities" - not compared to the blue bloods or helmet schools. Not to mention, while even a modest practice facility was once considered a recruiting advantage, that's no longer the case. We need to upgrade facilities just to show we care, let alone having it be a recruiting advantage. The arms race is clearly out of control, and as of now, we're barely in the game.

Go Gophers!!
