While TCU was learning about the danger, Minnesota was trying to grasp the opportunity. The Gophers were trying to repeat a 1999 upset of No. 2 Penn State, the last time they played the nation’s second-ranked team.

The banner headline atop Thursday’s Minneapolis Star-Tribune sports section read: “DARE TO DREAM.” A large rowdy towel-waving student section helped contribute to a TCF Bank Stadium record crowd of 54,147.

Things were primed for an early shock-the-college-football-world moment.

The 10 points scored by TCU tied its second-lowest total in the first half since going to the spread to begin the 2014 season. And the 23 total was TCU’s lowest since co-offensive coordinators Doug Meacham and Sonny Cumbie came on board.

At halftime, Patterson sounded like his voice was already a lost cause, rasping to ESPN that “we’ve got to run the football more. They’re dropping everybody.”

Each team lost prime scoring opportunities in the first half.

TCU’s Aaron Green fumbled at the Minnesota 11 early in the second quarter on a hard hit by Eric Murray, and Antonio Johnson recovered.

Minnesota’s Rodrick Williams, a former Lewisville High School standout, lost the football at the TCU and saw it bounce through the end zone for a touchback later in the quarter.

Then Oberkrom, who had connected from 53 yards on the first drive, missed from 29 yards when his attempt clanged off the left upright.

“I’m sure that i won’t be happy by about 5 o’clock tomorrow after i watch both sides of the ball [on tape],” Patterson said. “But right now, I’m just glad I’m getting on the airplane with something in the left-hand column instead of the right.”
