I keep reading how the Gophers have more talent then NMSU. Yet we lost to this team that we were favored by three TD's over. I look at experience to see how good a team is or will be. This goes from coaches down to players. Taking a quick look at experience people should not be surprised by the results.
For instance the Gophers have a first year coaching staff and new systems. NMSU is in the third year of a staff. USC is in the second year of a staff and has sanctions. I looked at the Depth charts of the following teams to see if we should be surprised what we've seen so far.
OFFENSE:
MN 1 FR, 2 SO, 1 JR, 7 SR
USC 3 FR, 3 SO, 4 JR, 1 SR
NMST 0 FR, 2 SO, 7 JR, 2 SR
OHIO 0 FR, 3 SO, 3 JR, 5 SR
DEFENSE
MN 1 FR, 1 SO, 3 JR, 6 SR
USC 2 FR, 2 SO, 4 JR, 3 SR
NMST 1 FR, 2 SO, 1 JR, 6 SR
OHIO 0 FR, 1 SO, 7 JR, 3 SR
USC has superior talent, but is young and in the second year of a program. They have slid by in two games.
MN has 17 Jr's and Sr's starting. Some more veteran players but many are in the 3-4 system in as many years. Development is hindered.
NMST has 16 Jr's and Seniors starting. Some of the Jr's are Walker's recruits and the others are now in the 3rd year of a program. The QB started five games as a true freshman last year. This year in two games he has passed for more yards and 4+ yards/pass then he did last year.
OHIO U. has 18 Jr's and Sr's starting and have a consistent program.
This is a reason we need to be patient. Let the systems get in place and players get experience. We will upset someone this year and hopefully that makes the season. Keep an eye on these other three teams and see how they end up. USC will likely fall flat in conference play and people will want Kiffin fired. NMST may hold their own and at the end of the year we see why we lost to them. One game does not make a season, unless it's beating an undefeated Badger team in November.
