Last nights loss was bad news. We all know it. Now Purdue becomes a must-win situation, or else we face the very real possibility of going 0-5 after a road trip to Bloomington.

So take your mind off that reality with a stroll down memory lane, at the corner of '80s St. and '90s Ave, in the city of Big Ten-ville.Perhaps some of you venerable, older Gopher fans can contribute to this with your own list of favorite Big Ten hoopsters from the 60s and 70s.

Sid, if you're reading this, I'd love to know more about some of the WWII-era Big Ten greats.
Reusse, I'd be willing to hear about how much better things were in the 70s if you'll entertain us at The Daily Big Ten.

Crushing Indiana, and Bobby Knight, by 50 (or so) was an awesome moment in time.

Yeah, that was pretty sweet, handing Knight his worst ever career loss.

I seem to remember some game down in Bloomington during the Clem era, where Haskins got himself ejected about 8 minutes into the game, as the foul discrepancy was something like 10-2. I think he might have taken his jacket off and thrown it on the floor. Even though we lost, I enjoyed his early theatrics and protest.

Lenard vs. Settles, circa 1994

1994, early March. Iowa @ Williams Arena. Gophers win in triple OT behind a heroic effort from Voshon Lenard. If my memory is correct, Jess Settles was fantastic for Iowa that night, as well. Both teams were absolutely drained afterwards.

The Mychal Thompson Gophers beat Marquette by about 20. Marquette goes on to win the NCAA title.

One of my memories from the 1989-90 season (not a good one, but memorable) was a game in Madison where the Gophers came from 20+ down midway in the second half to tie or take the lead late in the game. Wisconsin inbounded from under their basket with a few seconds left and threw a lob to one of their big guys who put it home at the buzzer. Wisconsin fans stormed the court and Dickie V screams "you would think they had won the national championship, baby." It is one of the last times that I recall Vitale doing a Gopher game (not necessarily a bad thing!)

The 1989 home win vs. Iowa. Shikenjanski scores from the paint with 2 seconds left. Great, great basketball game. Iowa had Marble, Horton and BJ Armstrong. Melvin Newbern was fantastic for the Gophers. Absolutely electric. Best Gopher game I've ever been to.

The most intense and memorable game I ever attended at Williams, I was a little single digit son with my dad. Alan Hornyak was a talented, physical and just a little bit dirty Ohio State guard. He elbowed and kneed the Gophers and Kent Nix all night long in a defensive, highly physical struggle. Each possession was seemingly memorable in a 50-50 type game. The Gophers did not lack for strength with Brewer, Behagen, Taylor and Dave Winfield. With little time left, a one possession game, the crowd roaring, the emotional Gophers had had enough of physical play, and Corky Taylor let Luke Witte have it, and down that 7 foot tower went. The rest of the Williams brawl is history.

Remember in the aftermath of the suspensions that followed, that that was the original Iron 5 Gopher team that took the Gophers to the small field NCAA. Dve Winfield played admirably as a sudden starter. Those were the days of true Gopher intensity. May those days of fan/coach/team involvement return again. Maybe we need to reinstate a little Harlem Globe Trotter pre-game routine (or something similar) to whip up the team and crowd and make the Gopher home games the "Happening" that they used to be.

The rest of the season was fun with the Iron Five. The State of Minnesota was united behind Jim Brewer, Clyde Turner, Dave Winfield, Keith Young and Bobby Nix. I will never forget the win over Illinois to clinch the Big Ten at home. That team had heart. Loved Clyde's rainbow shots from the corner. Maybe Tubby should show hilights from that season to show how hard teams can play.

The whole 96-97 season. Clem came out pre-season and said this team could win the Big Ten. The team was so much fun to watch with Sammy J., Bobby J., Eric H., John T., and Courtney J. We had Trevor W., Quincy, Charles T and Miles T. coming off the bench. It was a great team and games I will never forget are:
1. Coming back to beat Indiana at Indiana in the last minute
2. Beating Michigan at Michigan to win the Big Ten
3. Beating Clemson in the sweet 16 in overtime after Eric Harris got hurt
4. Beating UCLA to reach the Final Four

And who can forget the celebration at Williams Arena after the Gophers beat UCLA!

Good Times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indeed, Tap, and how about Bobby Jackson tip toeing down the sidelines against IL at home to clinch the title with a dunk. Look at the personnel on that 96-97 team - not all stars, but excellent team players with two great scorers.

Tubby would have had a great nucleus this year but for the defections, misdemeanors and injuries.
