In another dark year of Gopher FB, I am always looking for a glimmer of hope. Anyone watching Syracuse giving it to No. 15 W. Virginia?

Wasn't Syracuse a POS football program when we (barely) beat them a few years back? Anyone know how they built up their program? There is hope for even the most challenged programs.

I'd be curious how they turned it around too. If only because we play them next year.

Seriously, you want us to follow the Syracuse model to become an average team?

Syracuse is 5-2, with wins over Rhode Island, Wake Forest in overtime, Toledo in overtime (refs blew a missed extra point that cost Toledo), three point win over Tulane. Granted they took it to West Virginia today, but that might be more indicative of how overrated West Virginia, not how impressive Syracuse is. They also lost at USC by 21 and Rutgers in overtime.

I wouldn't say they have developed their program into a good program, I would just say they play in a below average (being complimentary) conference. I know 5 wins would sound good for the Gophers right now, but I don't think we should be modeling our program on a "Syracuse" model.

I understand your point, but if Kill is 5-2 in year three and win number 5 comes against a No. 15 ranked conference opponent, I think most Gopher fans would be elated.

I'm just wondering about their ascension from FBS sh!th0le to a program to be taken seriously.

Completely agree with your point, but I just think Big East is easier to become a contender than the Big 10. Hell we beat a #24 conference opponent last year, and don't forget where we thought we were as a program before the Northwestern game in 2008. Its easy to look good one week, its not necessarily an indicator of where a program really is.

I would take their record vs ours right now, but that isn't saying much

I watched that game tonight and thought the same things about Syracuse.

You'll notice they didn't do any one thing all that well. What they did was play disciplined, had a solid defense and ran well inside the tackles. I''m hoping those are attributes we'll develop over the next few years.

Good stuff. Marrone (sp?) seems to have a nice upward trajectory. Hoping Kill will give us a something similar.

I believe I mentioned Syracuse as one of our benchmark schools that we should measure our team success against. Looks like we couldn't keep pace with them even though they went through as tough of times as we have been experiencing. Hmmm. Looks like it doesn't take years to rebuild after all. Hire a coach and the following occurs:

4-9 in 2009, including loss to Minnie
7-5 in 2010
5-2 in 2011 to date

Prior to the new hire, they were:

3-9 in 2008
2-10 in 2007
4-8 in 2006
1-11 in 2005

They are a program on the rise and they have the coach to do it. He has program connections and a competent staff assembled. John Anselmo, their linebackers coach moved their defensive 3rd down ranking from 117th in 2008 to 28th. Last year their total defense ranked 7th. We should hire this guy. He had the highest winning percentage of any JUCO head coach with an .804 lifetime percentage over 15 years. Add to the fact he is a health professor, and we know he can actually teach.

There are a few articles out there on the net that tell you about the recruits he has been able to bring in.
In addition, he played a ton of True Freshman in 2009 and 2010.

The Syracuse model is similar to almost any model. They are doing nice things there and while it is considerably easier to turn it around in the Big East (maybe a small step up from the MAC), they've still improved quite a bit.

Saw that USF dropped Syracuse to 5-5, and now the 'Cuse will have to pull of an upset (small one) to become bowl eligible.

They have become an average Big East team (around .500), I still don't have an interest in modeling our program off Syracuse.
