Seems like the whole Big Ten is abuzz except for here. I have been trying to follow it pretty closely and am becoming resigned to the fact Minnesota will get screwed. That sentiment is probably widespread and causing some of the apathy?

I think it's a combination of that and the fact that we have a team with a lot of potential but a lot of question marks heading into a pivotal season.

If they go roughly with the NW/SE alignment that has been discussed, I think most Gopher fans can accept that.

How can you get screwed in realignments? It is pretty much common belief that Iowa and Wisconsin will remain on the schedule every year. The only way to be screwed is by being in a much tougher division, unless they put 4 of the top 6 programs in 1 division, the divisions are going to be pretty even.

If Joel's ok with it, we are too!

I'm stopping by Walgreen's to pick up some KY jelly in anticipation of the announcement. Figure it won't hurt as much when we get shafted.

The divisions are going to be set up as a stupid cash grab and will be impossible to identify by anybody except for the hardcore fans just like the ACC. It sucks, but it's all about $$$ and that's that.

And whichever team ends up in the other division, be it Iowa or Wisconsin, that rivalry with us will take a hit over time. Even if it is still played every year. It's just not as important if a spot in the title game isn't at stake. Michigan and Ohio State are going to find this out the hard way as well.

As preference in my earlier response

the KY will come in handy (did I just write KY - come - handy in the same sentence?) when our division is Ohio State-Penn State-Wisconsin-Purdue-Indiana-Minnesota-Wisconsin. What a blow to the travel budget.

Because we are about to be placed in a division with 4 teams Minnesota fans could care less about: OSU, PSU, Purdue and Indiana. If this happens, we are essentially going to be stuck in the Big Ten East, with two relevant games per year (Wisc and Iowa). I personally would much rather be with Michigan/MSU and Illinois/Northwestern.

You think so?

If Wisc and Iowa are in separate divisions...and there is 1 keeper rivaly to the other division...who says the gophers get to over rule Iowa-Wisconsin?

I sure hope we trump them...but I'm preparing for our tradition to be screwed.

If there is this talk of "balance" competitiveness...then why is there no talk of this not being permanent and every 6-10 years it will be re-evaluated?

I'm not sure if they are trying to avoid the issues in the Big 12 where the championship game is a foregone conclusion. (Texas vs Colorado or Oklahoma vs. Kansas State)

The single big game each year is a divisional game Texas vs OU (zero U for a Texas fan). Period...end of story.

They would have been far better off keeping Nebraska/Oklahoma in the same league....the Big 8 rescued Texas after the SWC broke up...and they were never happy with how things have gone since. I'm rambling.

Add Nebraska in the West...it preserves the most rivalries and right now the balance of power is about equal too.

Go Gophers!

What is the NW/SE alignment that has been discussed? The only serious one I've heard repeated among "insiders" is Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Purdue, Indiana, Penn State.

The perception is that we're going to get screwed so we are stoically waiting our fate.

NEB, MN, WI, NW, MICH, MSU

IA, ILL, PUR, IND, OSU, PSU

I've needed a realignment for some time. The last time I got tires the guys said the tires won't last long if I don't get it done. Now my tires are almost wore out again. I'm thinking I should get that done.

NEB, MN, WI, NW, MICH, MSU

IA, ILL, PUR, IND, OSU, PSU

This is the division alignment I believe we will get. And as long as Floyd of Rosedale is protected I guess this is ok. But I agree with others that Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin should always be in the same division. However, in this alignment we likely keep all 3 real trophy games, and end up in the opposite division from Big Ten Leviathan Ohio State. So this is better than a lot of other suggestions.

NEB, MN, WI, NW, MICH, MSU

IA, ILL, PUR, IND, OSU, PSU

Next to a pure East West split, this is the next best lineup for the Gophers. We have so much more in common with the teams in this scenario than if we were placed with OSU and PSU.

'Seems like the whole Big Ten is abuzz except for here.' Bosh.

We can easily get screwed. Imagine the above alignment scenario where Wisconsin-Iowa is a protected rivalry instead of us and Iowa. We'd get stuck with a protected rivalry with Northwestern or Illinois. Best of all we have an AD that's limp-wristed enough to let something like this happen.
