per the Sun Current:

Blake Cashman had several college football scholarship offers after graduating in 2015 from Eden Prairie High School, where he was a member of three state championship football teams.

However, the Eagle linebacker/defensive back decided to walk-on at the University of Minnesota and compete at the Division I level in the prestigious Big Ten Conference.

Cashman enjoys challenges and that is why his goal was to attain playing time as a Gopher freshman instead of sitting out the 2016 season as a redshirt.

“I am pretty competitive and didn’t want to redshirt my freshman season,” said Cashman last week while the Gophers were taking a two-week break in between spring practice sessions. “I had the opportunity to play on several of our special teams including kickoff coverage and punt returns.

“It was a good experience because I found out how much faster the pace is at this level of football. And the players are much bigger and stronger than the opponents I faced in high school.”

Go Gophers!!

He made a big tackle on kickoff one game. Someone refresh my memory.

He's free to make his own decisions, of course, but it was a pretty short-sighted one. He's going to be on scholarship soon (this year or next at the latest), and that would've been an extra year of school that he could've had the school pay for. There's no upside for a walk-on to be playing immediately (from his perspective), other than squashing his own impatience.

He's free to make his own decisions, of course, but it was a pretty short-sighted one (IN MY OPINION). He's going to be on scholarship soon (this year or next at the latest I THINK), and that would've been an extra year of school that he could've had the school pay for (UNLESS HE AND HIS FAMILY DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT). There's no upside for a walk-on to be playing immediately (UNLESS YOUR BAKER MAYFIELD, 2013 BIG TEN FRESHMAN OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AS A TRUE FRESHMAN WALK ON AND HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY AT OKLAHOMA BECAUSE OF IT), other than squashing his own impatience (OR WANTING TO FINISH SCHOOL IN FOUR YEARS).

Agreed.

He was great on kickoff coverage while healthy last year.

Short sighted only in respect to football, as a walk on, his football career is likely over after college. He just might not want to postpone his post football career.
