Rodney-

Just a friendly, but probably ignorant suggestion: try taking your guy off the dribble and if you can't clear him to the rim, elevate for the 14-18 ft jumper. In other words, go all Kobe Bryant from time-to-time! This might be a better fit for your game than the catch-and-shoot three point shot. I am pretty certain you will get some clean looks up in the stratosphere where you jump.

Agreed

Agreed whole-heartedly.

He needs to drive, and if the defender cuts him off, there is no way a defender will be able to defend a pull-up jumper with Williams hops.

Just another kid falling in love with the dunk and three-point jump shot.

The consensus seems to be that RW needs a grest deal of work on his jump shot mechanics b4 he will be a pull-up producer. Evidently he elevates off balance and to various verticals.

Very sound advice. It is an unstoppable move. Zero reason a kid like Rodney can't take two dribbles elevate and shot. Think MJ vs Craig Elho.

Makes perfect sense.

Is this a focus of the coaching for the kid?

Well hopefully part of the work he's doing involves the pull up from 15, cause that's gonna be open for him all day long. Watching the Wolves yesterday, Russell Westbrook was killin it from midrange, just pulling up instead of trying to go in there, cause usually there's traffic and guys trying to take the charge.

Rodney should attempt the shot he made about 10 times per game.

Rodney

Westbrook can handle the ball thats why he can get his shot off and go from point A to point B.

Rodney needs to become better handling the ball. His ball skills remind me of Corey Brewer. Brewer is a wing player that cant handle the ball it hinders his game just like Rodney.

Being a better ball handler would give him better balance and help his mid-renger jumper

Very good point, it's not as simple as I made it sound to just rise up and shoot it lol. I just think more players in general should work on the midrange aspect of their games, I see so many charges in games now, it's ridiculous. And once you perfect it, you become extremely hard to guard.

I think we should e-mail these suggestions to Tubby. They seem to make a lot of sense to me.

Excellent idea. I'm sure Tubby hasn't thought of any of this.

There is a reason that Rodney doesn't take his man off the dribble to the basket..... If he could do that, I'm sure that Tubby would have plays to clear-out a side for Rodney against man to man defenses to either stop and pop or get to the basket. He's a great talent, but has a long ways to go to be a complete player.

Exactly. And he's definitely tried to this year. Unfortunately he's only really capable (with some consistency) of beating his man baseline with a quick first step. He's tried that a lot this year. There's also a reason you don't see him take many pullup jumpers from 15 ft. That's not a high percentage shot for him. What he could do, however, is pullup when he's near the basket instead of jumping into players while attempting layups. He's committed a lot of charges.

Williams also seems a bit timid to me, not that he's afraid of contact or anything, but that he's afraid of doing something offensively that will piss Tubby off. "If I just catch the ball on the wing, don't move, and pass it to someone else, Tubby can't be mad at me."

At first I thought most this thread was tongue in cheek but some of you are actually serious thinking that a D-I basketball player needs advice from some rube sitting at his computer with Doritos crumbs all over the keyboard. :cool02:

This is priceless

I assume that you Art are the self appointed superintendent of all rubes. Your role is to simply come in and douse any optimism or expression if genuine interest in the home team. Do I have that about right? Good grief if a fan can't think outloud about the players or the team - then blow up the Gopherhole, speculation, conjecture and opinion about our rodents is the purpose of the deal. I doubt anyone in their wildest dreams figures that Tubby is taking notes for the next practice.

I read a few tweets regarding Rodney today that I guess I won't repost but they seemed to indicate, perhaps, Rodney needs to be working a bit harder on his game. I imagine otherwise he's still got his hands full. A baby about a year old, school, basketball, ?. Otherwise, typical sophomore slump. I trust Tubby to get the best out of him as time goes on.

+1. That's what I was thinkin but wasn't sure if section was kidding.

I was kidding. A coach who makes about 2 million dollars a year and has a national championship would likely have thought of these "Great ideas" himself.

Sophmome Slump?

What are you talking about sophmore slump, for all the hype Rodney has received, he has been a complete disappointment for both years, other then a few good games against poor opponets last year, what has he done?

wow, keep bashing him. what has he done? he plays D, he rebounds, he plays within himself, he gets a couple points from time to time, and he blocks the ball from time to time, no hes not scottie pippen, but hes better than 85% of the SFs in the game of college bball.

Geez, how many of these guys have kids? Does the Barn have a day care facility?

Rodney will come around.

sophomore slump (sof'-more slump) noun. The period of time during a basketball player's second season in which there is a notable decline in productivity as compared to their rookie season, whether due to injury, fatigue, or the inability to cope with the higher expectations placed upon them.

How unfortunate your parents didn't practice effective birth control Art.

THIS.

He made a nice driving move and a 5 ft. leaner late in the game against St. Joe's for a key basket. He needs to do more of this. His shots from 22 ft. are not what you would call consistent.
