Sugar Bowl Postponed

Not posted on ESPN or CNN or Fox yet.

ESPN just posted it.

Yep. Found multiple explosives and there may be more suspects. Gunna require additional sweeps and security.

over the years, there have been rumors of attacks on major sporting events, but so far, we've never seen one happen.

puts me in mind of the movie "Black Sunday" from 1977. If you haven't seen it, a Middle East terrorist group attempts to carry out a mass casualty event at the Super Bowl. a female terrorist seduces the pilot of the Goodyear Blimp (Bruce Dern) to get his cooperation, with the plan calling for a bomb loaded with nails to be planted under the blimp and detonated over the stadium.

an intelligence officer played by Robert Shaw works to uncover and prevent the plot from taking place.

they actually filmed footage for the movie during Super Bowl X (Steelers/Cowboys) with some of the actors on the field before the game and some of the actual game footage was used in the movie.

needless to say, this movie would never be made today.

Stadium attacks a plot feature of The Sum of All Fears by Tom Clancy (nuclear warhead), and The Dark Knight Rises film.

Given the rise in drone tech the nut jobs will have a variety of new ways to defeat security.

1972 Munich Olympics

Atlanta Olympics bombing.

I had to go back and check - 1 death but 111 injuries. I honestly did not remember that many injuries from that event. so certainly significant.

I guess what I was envisioning was some kind of an in-stadium attack where the death toll would be much higher. not to minimize the loss of any life - but 1 dead or 10 dead is not on the same scale as a possible in-stadium attack where there could be thousands of casualties. that is more of the worst-case scenario - and why (I assume) that the Sugar Bowl was postponed.

Senseless BS. Shame these aholes have to take out innocent people as opposed to just taking themselves out.

I don't know why a movie with that theme wouldn't be made today. Sounds like an extended version of an episode of the current TV series FBI or FBI International. Middle Easterners and Eastern Europeans probably are the most frequently used ethnic villains for thrillers these days.

I think I've seen bits of the film but never in its entirety. I'll try to catch it if it's shown somewhere in the future. Watching Robert Shaw is always a treat.

The attack had nothing to do with the Sugar Bowl though, did it? Guess I haven't read much about it.....but I figured it was New Years and Bourbon Street is a populated target. Sugar Bowl being there just being a coincidence.

Investigation has shown evidence of a coordinated attack with multiple potential targets.
