There has been some speculation here about how many season tickets are bought by non-gopher fans. Well, "non Gopher fan" can have different definitions. But, a review of the tickets available on stubhub shows a pretty clear pattern. Pretty much all the home games have between 500-600 tickets available and these tickets for the most part are pretty much always in the same sections. So, my assumption is of the 47,000+ (non visitor allocated) seats, fewer than 600 are probably held by people who are in it for something other than Gopher football. It also shows that these tickets were offered for the full season, if not all but a game or two by the people who posted them there (non gopher fans, or business only interest).

Of course, none of this takes into account people who are selling tickets by other means (craig's list, etc.). It also doesn’t take into account the people who will be selling individual game tickets because they can’t make it that weekend, or just want to cash in a little bit. But, the numbers of available tickets on stubhub as well as the locations for those tickets are pretty consistent, and since they are there already it lends to the belief that these are the tickets that have been purchased strictly for business or out of town interests.

It also makes me wonder how there can be student section seats appearing there when they will need student ID’s along with the tickets to get in.

Just some food for thought…

great analysis. thanks! i agree with your assumptions. in the grand scheme of things 600 season tickets possibly belonging to brokers (would guess most of them belong to brokers) and non-gopher fans is really not that many.

on your second question relating to how can their be student section tickets appearing on stub hub considering the holder of a student ticket will need to prove their active U of M student status at the gate while also presenting a U-Card picture ID that is legit and corresponds to the ticket holder. well, let's just say being in college doesn't necessarily make one truly "smart"! some of these dolts trying to get a quick buck for their ticket are going to be in for a rude awakening and don't seem to realize it. oh well....you live and you learn i guess ;)

I anticipate many of these students will still pick up their tickets and sell them and leave the buyer out to dry when he/she/they arrive to the stadium to find that they've purchased tickets that won't allow them to enter the stadium. A savvy buyer would be on the lookout for these kinds of things - it's a buyer beware world out there.

exactly

Quick check on Craigslist for Gopher football tickets. Here are some examples:

Wanted
- "im in need of a pair of tix to the MN vs WI game in OCT at TCF Stadium" - willing to pay $200. This is 3 months before kickoff and someone will pay $100/seat
- "Looking for total of 10 Tickets for the Gopher vs Badger game. I think its Oct 3rd. Please contact me with details on what you have and the cost. Expecting family to cross the boarder for the battle." - Nice spelling. No mention on what they're willing to pay. My take - pure arrogance that anyone would have 10 tickets they'd be willing to sell to an obvious Badger fan.
- "NEED 2 GOPHER FOOTBALL TICKETS WANT TO BRING MY BOY TO A GAME AT NEW STADIUM CANT SPEND ALOT WITH TIMES BEING TOUGH WILL SPEND 100.00 TOTAL BETWEEN THE 2 TICKETS.. UPPER DECK FINE BIG TEN GAME-WISCONSIN,MICH ST,PURDUE CALL (952)270-9253 " - well seems like a Goph fan just wanting to bring his kid to a game. Fair enough.
- "WANTED 4 tix Gopher- Wisconsin Football Oct. 3rd - $1" - wonder where this guy is from.

For Sale
- "I have a student season ticket available for purchase. It is in section 223, which is upper deck in front of the end zone. Price is negotiable, first come first served basis. " - obviously doesn't know its GA and the rules on students getting in.
- "I have two (2) seats for sale at the new TCF Bank Stadium (a.k.a THE VAULT). The Gopher Ticket office said season tickets will be delivered in late August. As soon as my tickets are in hand, I will be ready to disburse them. (...)" Selling 5 of the 7 games, including AFA, Cal, and Wisc (my 3 most anticipated games). Obviously bought them to turn around and resell.
- "2 tickets to the Gopher football home opener. Gophers vs. Air Force Saturday September 12th. Seats are aisle seats 1 and 2 section 233 row 29. Also available same tickets for Illinois November 7th $250.00 and South Dakota State November 14th $250.00. Price for 2 tickets and parking pass. Tickets delivered when payment clears. serious replies only at [email protected]" - Well certainly seems to confirm 100+ for a seat at the new stadium.

Anyway the list goes on. I think Craigslist gives you a better picture about the individual who is selling/buying than StubHub. I have a feeling come Sept there will be a lot more of this on Craigs.

i am going to email that last guy in the FOR SALE list ([email protected]) who took up season ticket spots only to turn around and sell them just to let him know that i think he is a piece of sh!t ;)

Be carefull...

If you go after the guy for selling his tickets, the Ron Paul fans are going to go after you instead.

The guy looking to buy tickets for $1 isn't actually looking to spend $1 for tickets. Craigslist makes you enter a price, so some people put $1 when they don't want to commit to a price. He probably just wants to see who is offering tickets at the lowest price.

For the guy who wants two tickets for $100, he might do better settling for the SDSU game.
