Dave Aranda flummoxed the Gophers with his deceptive blitzing strategies for three years as Wisconsin’s defensive coordinator. So when he left the Badgers for LSU last winter, Minnesota’s coaching staff seized a chance to get his advice.

The Gophers run a base 4-3 defense — four down linemen, three linebackers — and Aranda had done a masterful job transitioning Wisconsin from a 4-3 to a 3-4. The Badgers led the nation in scoring defense last year.

After seeing Minnesota’s own talent shift, with considerably more talent at linebacker than defensive end, first-year defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel called Aranda for some tips.

“I firmly expected, ‘Hey, you know, I’m not going to do that,’ ” Sawvel said. “But he said, ‘Sure, let’s talk after recruiting.’ ”

Aranda spent several hours over two days in February talking with Sawvel at the Gophers football complex. They’d known each other from recruiting circles, and since they weren’t scheduled to compete against each other anytime soon, the time seemed right to share ideas.

Go Gophers!!

I have a suspicion that the Gophs will wind up playing more 3-4 defense than the coaches are letting on. They are thin at DE, and deep at LB. would not be surprised at all to see a lot of Coughlin or Martin as an edge rusher in 3-and-long situations. And, in general, I think we will set a lot more situational substitutions.

As I mentioned in another thread, playing 3-4 likely means taking your best DT Richardson off the field. 3-4 defenses a need big, space eating NT, to work the best and Richardson is not that. He is a 4-3 DT, who needs another bigger DT next to him to take on blockers to allow him to be the most effective. He's not a 3-4 DE either.

I hear what you are saying, but I doubt they'd let Richardson being undersized be the sole reason to avoid the 3-4. If using a 3-4 helps with other weaknesses I can still see them using it.

Oh for sure and Richardson won't play every down anyways. I think it will be more of a situational thing, with the 4-3 remaining the base defense, for now. Will be interesting to watch though.

I think Richardson would still succeed in the 3-4 at the college level - most likely at one of the "ends" (I don't know the names of the 'techniques'). He is very quick and athletic and would work basically as a tackle would in a 4-3 with LBs rushing on the outside. People that have played or coached football, please correct me, but it is my understanding that in a '3-4' that a LB will basically fill in for that 4th rusher - which, in the end, doesn't really affect the tackles all that much - in fact athletic DTs may be affected less so than other types (but again - I never played/coached - so this is completely viewed from afar).

My biggest concern is that this is this year's 'hurry-up' offense and we won't really see it implemented all that much. I mean this has made Wisconsin's defense the last couple years - we NEED to do it. The 'dopes' that have become stars for the badgers have done so solely based on this philosophy - which is doubly awesome that they will be victimized by this week 1 against LSU #realathletes.

Look for Bucky to try and hire Aranda as head coach after firing Chryst this year. Barry passed on Chryst twice. Either he will be fired or mysteriously resign for a lateral coaching position (Bielma) or a step down Anderson).

Probably just an idiot delusional skunk fan. Yes, I'm aware that doesn't narrow it down much.

We need our defense to take next step if we want to occasionally contend for B1G west

Glad they're looking at all options

Not saying this can't happen but why wouldn't have Barry hired Aranda over Chryst to begin with then?

Wait wat?

Chryst was supposedly Barry's back pocket dude for a while now, you think he'd bail on him all of a sudden after a rough year with a crazy schedule?

I don't know much about badger football but I was under the impression that he was very well thought of. I am just assuming you are just taking a shot.
